Hi again Leanne,
Many thanks for your question I posted in April wk1 about Zoe`s rash. She hasn`t had eggs or cherries for a while, but we have still had the rash battle after introducing her onto cow`s milk. We switched Zoe to soy milk (which she loves, thank goodness) and noticed an improvement in the rash but she also loves yogurt and cheese and has at least 1 serve every day. I know this could be stating the bleeding obvious, but since she`s better with soy milk, should I be looking for soy/other based yogurt and cheese as well? Her rash is around her mouth and she`s also got a few spots around the inner corners of her eyes and her upper cheeks. Is it likely that she`ll grow out of it?
Also, Zoe`s been a bit resistant to increasing texture in foods... we try her on the lumpy stuff at every meal and snack with some success but she shows a clear preference for the mash and puree. She loves to feed herself toast, mini muffins and some small pieces of fruits etc, so of course we encourage this but with varying degrees of success, especially with meats and vegetables. However I`m wondering if we`re pandering to her love of puree (especially the Rafferty`s tubes which have been a godsend when we`re in a hurry or travelling) or is this pretty normal? She turned 1 yesterday and I`m not sure if this is just her stage of development or if it has any relationship to the teeth which I think are erupting (lots of full, semi-runny nappies).
Thanks again for answering my previous questions.
Amanda
Its so great to hear back from members, so thanks for taking the time to update me. Sounds like you are well on the road to recovery re: the skin rash, well done to you! Given Zoe`s has improved by just swapping to soy it does sound like a dose issue and lactose. This is very common! In regards to going totally to soy, firstly you may find that other soy products don`t get the same thumbs up with taste. I recommend you try a soy yoghurt and cheese just so you know the difference. Also yoghurt and cheese are both low in lactose and there is reasonable research that suggests continued low exposure leads to better tolerance. So if you can I would keep the dairy going, also the probiotics in the yoghurt can help with skin rashes also (in terms of immunity).
Remember that fish oils have a great reputation with things like eczema thought they can take up to 6 weeks to really see a difference. I would still recommend chatting to someone about those.
In regards to the issue of texture, yes, ideally by 12 months toddlers will be chomping away on all the foods they love. You are right though teething can affect their eating habits and put them off things that upset their gums. So given Zoe is eating lumpy food okay, it may help to offer chunky food where ever possible but offer a range of options, for example, slice of avo and some grated carrot, slices of apple with some banana. That way you are covering the bases nutritionally and allowing Zoe to choose what suits her. Monitor it and keep a note that things come back to a full adult-style diet when it all settles down.
If you find that a preference for soft foods goes on too long it can help to start with a good paediatric speech pathologist to check out Zoe`s oral mechanics.
I hope that helps.
All the best,
Leanne
