I started my son on solids just after he turned five months as my milk supply had dropped. He is now eating 3 meals a day. Breakfast he has rice cereal and for lunch and dinner a combination of veges, fruit and yoghurt. Now that he has tasted a wide range of flavours, he is not eating his breakfast which is rice cereal. I`ve tried baby porridge and the flavoured rice cereal also but he just turns away. I think they are all too bland in flavour for him. My question is what are some other options for breakfast for his age - 6 and a half months? Can I give him weetbix? Also, he watched me like a hawk when I have toast so I`ve been putting small pieces in his mouth which he chews with his gums and swallows. Is this ok?
Brekky is notoriously one of the harder meals to create variety in. You might find using his cereal with yoghurt and fruit helpful (though by the sounds of it he can smell it and may just need a break from it), also yes you can offer other brekky’s. In fact you don’t have to offer foods the way we as adults tend to eat. In Japan it is common to start the day with rice and fish; we are only limited by our perception of what a breakfast is.
So you can also offer yoghurt and fruit, even vegies and yoghurt, well cooked rice (or millet, semolina etc) with yoghurt and fruit. On the issue of cereal given he has trialed a little bread already and it seems without any problem, yes you probably could offer him a nice cereal. Opt for ones that are sugar free, and also consider some of the older baby cereals, the age on the packet is just a guide. As baby moves onto a more varied diet he will not need rice cereal for iron every day, he will be getting it from his other foods.
Once you know gluten-containing foods are okay this opens the door to toast and oats etc. If you wanted to trial finger foods that he can hold when ready a feeding mesh is an excellent way to start (in a month or two). At this stage babies are really just gettting the oral skills to chew and move food about their mouths in order to swallow.
Sounds to me that you are both going great!
All the best,
