Hi, my baby girl (Rachel) is 10months old and I have recently swapped from breastfeeding to formula about 1 month ago (as she was just wanting to snack at the breast anywhere upto 10 times a day!)
She has been a great eater of solids until recently, but I think this is just a fussy stage/teething/illness (tonsilitis).
Since starting on formula she is having 4 milk feeds/day (2x 200ml and 2x100ml) - 1 at 7am, the next 2 when she wakes form daytime sleeps (approx 11am and 3.30pm) and the last at 6.30pm.
I think that she maybe should be having just 3 milk feeds/day? 3x200ml? but was wondering if this is the case at what time the middle feed comes in and where in relation to her lunch time solid feed it should be? Before lunch or after?
Thankyou
Sharon
the timing of milk and solids feeds does tend to differ from one family and baby to another. At this age if you are offering formula after a meal that is one of the more important factors, this way baby’s formula won’t displace meals, instead they compliment them. Beyond that baby should having 3 meals and 2-3 snacks a day. Potentially you can add those three bottles in where it suits you and baby, remembering that they are after a meal or snack.
What I have done is copied in the Karitane routine, there are dozens out there, but I personally found this flexible and realistic. On routines I found Karitane was really helpful, they recommend the following for bubs 9-12 months:
- Milk feed- Up time 3 to 4 hours – Breakfast
– Play
– Morning tea
– Sleep (1 to 2 hrs)
- Up time 3 to 4 hours – b’feed
– Play
– Sleep (approx. 1hr)
- Up time 3 to 4 hours
– Solids
– Bath
– Milk feed
– Quiet time
– Bed time
You would simply slot in the times as per your own routine. Keep in mind that your baby’s growth and development are good indicators of how she is fairing with regards to her feeding. If you find Rachel’s growth stagnates or drops then this is a sign that you need to adjust things. However, if she continues to grow at a consistent rate and is happy and healthy then you can be pretty sure all is well.
Just one more thing, bubs can take up to 6 weeks to get back into their routine after being sick, so stick with the routine you choose and let it play out for a good few weeks.
I hope that is helpful
All the best
Leanne
