Not eating 1 year old

My 1 year old used to eat anything i gave him and in large amounts now in the past week since turning one he refuses to eat anything. he is lucky to eat 2-3 spoons of food a meal and i have noticed he is loosing weight! ( he is very chubby so he is not dropping away) He is still happy and playing and still has 3 bottles a day.
Is this a new stage of being fussy or do i have a drama.

Answer: Hi there,
first off, if you notice your toddler is dropping down the percentile charts I would definitely pop into see your ECN or GP just to check things over. Likely there is nothing wrong but, it would be a good start.

Next, you mention bottles. You may need to just address these; it is quite common for toddlers to rely heavily on bottles, which then displace actual food and meals. Toddlers are busy people and some would rather just guzzle down a bottle or have one on the go and skip eating altogether.

It can be tricky to wean a toddler who relies on milk for nutrition (which want meet all his nutritional needs on its own), so you may want to chat to your ECN about this process and devise a way forward without it causing any undue stress. In the meantime try to offer bottles away from meal-times, certainly after meals and a good time after so your tot doesn’t just hang out for it.

Even if it is a stage that he is loosing weight should be checked over; even very fussy eaters will still generally continue to grow at a consistent rate for them.

Hope that helps
All the best and have a lovely Festive Season
