Why is it recommended to wait until after 2 years to feed a baby/toddler smoked salmon?

Hi, I've just read your advice that smoked salmon be left until children are over 2 years. I understand that fresh salmon is better than smoked but our 13 month old adores smoked salmon and eats at least 1-2 slices of Tasmanian smoked salmon each day. I was concerned at the amount of sodium - is this why you suggest to wait? Thanking you!

Answer: Hi there,
fish is such a fantastic food, but like other foods we can alter it to a point where the health benefits are reduced. Yes, indeed the salt content is one of the issues, plus that it is raw fish, and also that commonly the chemicals used in the ‘smoking’ process aren’t the nicest, especially for tots. You may be able to find naturally smoked fish, or perhaps just check the chemicals noted on the pack and opt for the one you feel is less of an issue.

A tiny bit should be fine, but you cant beat fresh home-cooked, or even tinned (which has been shown to still have viable levels of EFAs).

Incidentally, it’s great your toddler is enjoying a wide array of foods, well done.
