Cold sores and treatment

My husband suffers from cold sores and has one at the moment and now it looks like my 11 month old son is developing one on his lower lip. Can you advise of any treatment available?

Answer: Hi,
Cold sore in very young babies can be risky, I’d urge you to check with your GP and/or pharmacist. There is treatment which can be used, but once the baby has been exposed to and activated the herpes zoster virus, then it stays in their system long term. This is not such a problem as long as they stay well and not run down. The mode of transmission is saliva and mucous and parents are the major source of transmission for herpes in children. You’ll need to be very careful about your hygiene, hand washing and washing up/dish washing of all feeding and bottles/teats/dummies etc.
