Hi Maree, I have a 19mth boy and was wondering what is the ideal number of hours a child of this age should sleep. He currently wakes around 5am - 6am each morning, has a sleep around 12 noon which varies from 1 hour - 3 hours and then I put him back to bed around 7.30pm each night. I am finding that he keeps waking at least 1 or 2 times per night and when he wakes the 2nd time he thinks it is time to get up for the day.I have tried to put him to bed later so he will sleep in the morning but it makes no diffrence. When I go in to settle him - basicallyh I tell him it is still sleep time, give him a pat and then leave but then the screaming starts. So to avoid the screaming I get him out and end up on the lounge with him as I am still tired, not sure what else I can do and 9m out of ten times we are up for the day as once he is fully awake I can not calm him to get him back to sleep. Should I let him sleep during the day for so long or not?
Some toddlers are just early risers and you would expect him to still be having one good early afternoon nap at this age and he is going down at a perfect hour of 7.30 pm. However, I would not give in to the getting up during the night and going to the lounge room as this is becoming a habit and he knows you will give in to it. I know it is sooo hard to have a battle going on during the night and it disrupts everyone but if you can persevere with resettling him at this time for a week or so (with the support of the rest of the household) then you could all be sleeping well during the night. My advise for the early rising is get up, get your chores done, evening meals partly prepared which takes the pressure of the end of the day when we are all tired. Try our It`s Time To Sleep settling techniques for 6 to 12 months if he is still in a cot.
