Hi Maree,
My baby is 11 months old. Most nights he falls asleep in his cot on his own (sometimes he needs some patting and shushing from me but not always) but then wakes constantly during the night. He will sit up and wait for me and when I go to him, he will lay down and go to sleep immediately as long as I touch him or stand next to the cot. This can go on every 15 minutes for hours. I am weaning him at the moment and when I removed the rollover feed, he started waking at 4.30am for a breastfeed. He won`t take no for an answer and in the interests of sleep, I feed him. He goes straight back to sleep (but wakes 15 minutes later unless I put him in bed with us). He has never slept well - I could count the number of times he has slept for more than 3 hours at a time on one hand. He was a reflux baby which really started off all the problems but although that seems to be much better these days, the sleeping isn`t. His daytime sleep is fine, he usually has two 1.5 hour sleeps each day - again, he goes to sleep in his cot on his own during the day. It`s the nights that are wearing us down. We plan to move his cot out of our room to see if that makes a difference. Do you have any tips for how to make this transition smoother?
Thanks,
Collette.
He relies heavily on your presence to return to sleep and if you really want to change this I think you would be best to try our settling program and you will need to make the move out of your room to see any results from your efforts. There will be no smooth transition but if you follow the techniques precisely then it will be a quicker, rather than long drawn out transition.
Cheers,
Maree
