I`m happy to go to formula if this will help him to sleep longer at night

Hi, I have a 5 mouth old baby, who wakes up between 2 - 3 times during the night. He is also a little under weight, so therefore I get up every time to feed him, however I`m feeling very sleep deprived and in need of some advice on how to get him to eat more during the day and sleep longer at night? He is breastfed and will only be on for around 5 minutes during the day feeds and 10 minutes during the night feeds on one breast. Im happy to go to formula if this will help with his weight gain and sleep longer at night? Karen

Answer: Hi Karen,
Definitely talk to your health nurse about the feeding and his weight for age and get her advise on that Constantly feeding through the night means he will take less during the day and it becomes a real cycle. I am thinking that you would probably be feeding baby back to sleep each time also which results in baby waking to look for your comfort to return to sleep and therefore snacking 24 hours rather than having good long feeds during the day she may also suggest supplementing with some solids. I would highly recommend you follow our settling program and just offer one overnight feed (at about 6 months you might expect baby to sleep right through the night. If baby is settled awake into the cot he learns to sleep independently this way he wakes if he is hungry not because he needs comforting.
You can get details for our settling program from the website or from www.itstimetosleep.com
