Newborn sleeping
Hi Jane,
My baby boy is 7 days old and his sleeps and feeds are all over the place. Sometimes he'll feed for 20 mins and sleep for 4 hours. And sometimes he'll only sleep for 30 mins. He often falls asleep while feeding and during the day we can transfer him to his cot no problems and he continues sleeping, while at night he gets and upset and will only sleep a decent amount of time with either me or my partner cuddling him. I just want to know if this is normal as I have no idea and the midwives all had differing opinions
Jane ...
Answer:
This sounds completely normal and only to be expected at this very young age. It’s impossible to implement a routine or have any expectation of a baby so young. The most you can do is feed him when he’s hungry and care well for yourselves. Over time, his patterns of feeding and sleep will become more predictable and set, but until then it will pay just to go with his needs and enjoy this special time.
He does need you to be both emotionally and physically available to him and will need lots of cuddles.
Do go to your local child health centre and have a chat with one of the child health nurses, they are an excellent source of support and advice. Along with the Huggies site and forums of course!
Cheers
