International flights with babies - any advice?
Hi, we are taking our little girl Jessica over to the UK in May for a month - she'll be 13 months old then - does anyone have any advice to help the trip go easier. I'm so excited to see my family at home but the thought of 23 hours on a plane is making me want to vomit! Any advice would be much appreciated!
Hi there,
make sure you ring the airline now and request the bulk head with a bassinet so that they allocate you those seats. Also request baby meals too!
You'll probably find that your baby will sleep a lot of the way..but it can be helpful to start changing their sleep pattern a week or two before you leave. Maybe waking up earlier so that they are ready to sleep when you board the plane and when they are awake on the plane, walk up and down a bit. Take lots of toys and lots of little snacks for entertainment. Have a great holiday!

Hi
While I don't have any advise your question got me thinking.....We've been wanting to visit family in New Zealand or go for a trip down to Tassie for a holiday but I was wondering what bubs travel in? Jeb's nearly 6 months old now and we were looking at going away in the next couple months some time. Do the airlines have special capsules for them or do they have seat where you just bring your car seat for them?
We were meant to go to NZ for xmas but I said no coz I didn't know how bub would travel. Anyone travelled short distances with younger bubs? smile

Hi Louise
We are taking our bub to London in Feb - he will be 9 months.
The advice that I have been given is that when you get on the plane to change your watch to UK time and start getting the sleeping routine going asap. When it is "night" time do the same things you would usually do ie...read a book, wash bub's face arms and legs etc...if they usually have a bath, put on their sleeping bag etc....so bub's is aware that it is time for a big sleep.
We have taken our son on domestic flights and he was fine. I just made sure he had a bottle when we got on the plane to settle him for take off and same for landing - which helps for the pressure in the ears.
I used to work for Flightcentre so like has already been mentioned to you ask for a bassinet seat. Some airlines also have a seat that can be strapped in if bub's is too big for bassient that you can also use.
I am more worried about his jetlag than the flight. I am concerned that he will be up all night and sleep all day and then that we will just get that right and come home and have to do it all again....I suppose it will sort itself out.
Good luck

Hi! We just took our 8 month old on a 6 hour flight, and she was supurb! On take off, she drank her bottle, which made her ears pop regularly and i had a dummy for her on the flight which also helped a great deal.
Just a word, thats awesome that you have requested the bulkhead, however if there are younger babies on the flight and not enough bassinets - your baby will get moved from the bulkhead. Just be awere!!
