Please help ease my worried mind

My 4 and half month old girl doesn't always make eye contact with me. When I hold her on my lap she will avoid eye contact with me!!! Is this normal??? she seems to be more interested in what is going on around me.

I don't know if I can really help you but my DD used to do the same thing to me and anyone who held her. She's grown out of it with me but still does it with other people. Saying that she is very curious still about what's going on around her and won't look at me for too long. We often catch her looking at us when we're looking away...wierd I know.

i think that is normal. there are a lot of new things to look at that catch their attention, so don't worry too much about it just yet!

our little boy is coming up to 4 months but he has always been an eye contact boy, he waits till you look at him then gives big cheeky smiles. every baby is different though!
I read somewhere the other day that eye contact gives babies a rush of endorphins and makes them feel a burst of positive love type feelings, maybe that sensation is a little strange to her ? Maybe she will just get used to the feeling and grow to relish in it with time smile

I might be able to help.I work in childcare, bub is still at a very curious age and the world is crazy stimulating so it may just be an overload of the senses. If you worried get bub in a quiet room and lay her down and stand above her making eye contact if you are right in bubs eyeline she should hold your gaze for a long time, talk to her she should talk back and have a conversation of goos. When you hold her up on your lap she can see everythin around her if you lay her down and block her gaze she should respond.

Hi Mumsy81....please I now wish for you to ease my worried mind!! My 11week old son does EXACTLY the same thing your daughter did at 4.5months old....he deliberately turns away from whoever is holding him? Smiles alot, coos, giggles, reaches for toys so eyesight great, he holds our gaze when in his cot, on his playgym,changetable, in bath, bouncer, carseat etc but as soon as we hold him upright he will turn away...and if we try to turn him towards us he will turn the other way?? Alot of people have noticed....I'm so worried, a wreck to be honest...my daughter never did this? Would LOVE & appreciate a reply from you please...thanks so much, hope all is well with you and your little girl

I have a brother who is autistic and he did this too. I asked my mum and she said he started avoiding eye contact at 4 months old. This kind of behavior should be covered at your Maternal & child health checkups. My mum said to watch closely as they get older for doing 'compulsive' things like lining up toys in rows, spinning wheels on car toys, freaking out if you change their routine etc.
Of course it could just simply be that something else is more interesting to look at rather than your face and your baby will grow out of it when she is older. It is hard to know at this age - It will be very apparent when your child is 2 if there are any problems or not.
But to ease your mind, I love my brother and he is VERY intelligent and besides the times of meltdowns when things change or strangers touch him he is kind and nice and helped me with my homework when we were kids!

both my kids did/do this. i wiggle my fingers in front of his face and bring them around to in front of my eyes then when he is looking at them/me and say a big hello to him with a giant smile, just make it like a game

My 3 month old also does this, I try everything but she insists on avoiding eye contact. I'm not worried though as other times she loves to look at me and smile.
If I had the same face looking at me all the time while the world is going by, I'd be trying to look past them too.
However, if in doubt get it checked out!

Babies at this age gets a lot more to see and they mainly stare at few things, the lights and fan and they even talk and smiles at bulb or any light. It is very normal and no need to be so much bothered. I think talking is the best way to easily catch their attention.
