My baby went to the 8 weeks check yesterday; the nurse mentioned that her head circumference which is 37cm is below average, she said we need to observe her for that matter... I am a bit worried about that, has anybody had the same experience before? Is it normal? Any input is much appreciate it.

hi there,
hi there,
I had the same thing happen but at the other end of the scale. what I can tell you is NOT to panic. Your bub prob hasn't even had her first growth spurt yet. Sometimes the body grows quicker than the body, then the head catches up. Each measurement taken of the head is like measuring a footbal...all different people doing it, all measure it a slightly different way. The nurse or doctor should measure your girl's head at the 2month immunisation, if you or the doctor are worried, ASK for an ultrasound before 3months, so the fontinel isn't closed over. 35cm-38cm is the average for a babys head cirumference. your girl is just growing on her own average and Iam sure in her own time.My son's head was 37cm in circumference at birth. His head grew very rapidly, then his body caught up. (He was a bit of a boof head)lol, but is all in proportion now.
The head cirumference for a child has alot to do with your genes: ie: the hat size of your family. we have researched alot on this because our son's head was rapidly going up in his chart, and my cousin passed away at 8yrs from a rare brain tumours. we didn't hesitate and got a scan. Do you own measurements at home, and monitor it yourself. does your bub have a turned eye? Or if she is not doing the normal things she is meant to be doing at 8wks of age, then talk to your doctor about looking into it. She is probably just growing at her own rate, and in her own precious time. I know it is nerve racking but to ease your mind, check her yourself, go to the doctors and let him know what the nurse said. Write your measurements down.
you will feel better after seeing the doctor and having another professional monitor your bub too!
Take care.
Thanks a lot for your reply.
My GP has checked the head circumference of the baby today, and she believes it is increasing as it should be... GP believes that the nurse took the measurements wrong.
