Hip Dysplasia Rss

My 7 week old baby was put in a hip brace today as she has hip dysplasia.
She was in 000 clothes but cant wear them now as the brace holds her legs in a frog like position. We got some bigger jumpsuits for her but they really arent working for her either. Does anyone know what is good to dress these bubs in?? or where I can get suitable clothes for my little one?
Hi,

My daughter was put in a pavlik harness at 6 days old for 3 months. Was very overwhelming at first, but you get used to it.
I didn't worry about anything with legs or domes at the crouch. Just dresses, t-shirts and long sleeve t-shirts. We were lucky that it was summer.
All her clothes were size 00, have sooo many NB and 000 clothes at aren't worn!!
Best type of dress are ones that fall from under the bust. Don't buy any that are straight up and down, don't work at all. My daughter had about 4 dresses for going out and at home she just wore a t-shirt. Being summer I found it hard to get long sleeve t-shirts so my mum cut the domes off her suits and made long t-shirts. When you do go out, just wrap her really well with a rug.
Bonds make a really cute nighty that has only 3 button on the back, that was perfect for sleep, not sure where you can get them from now though. They suggested we could put socks under her straps, but that put heaps of creases in her feet. Towards the end we had to go up to 1 yr old socks as the smaller sizes where too tight and leaving horrible marks on her feet.
Not sure what type of harness you have, but our's wasn't allowed to be removed at all, so sponge baths only, after about 6 weeks I realised I haven't been cleaning her toes and underneath them proberly as she would curl them up when touched, yucky!!!!
I also found putting a soft rug under the sheets helped Paige sleep better, must be uncomfortable sleeping with something sticking into your back. Don't worry about tummy time, or do it on your lap with her over a pillow.
They told us that Paige would be delayed with her movement, but about 3 weeks from getting the brace off she was shuffling backwards on her back and now at 8 months she is doing her own style of crawling.
Sorry for the novel, all the best and let me know if you have any more questions.
Hi,

My girl was in a harness from 8 weeks for 3 months it was full on and it was in the winter, but the best thing was I found the best clothes for her and she lived in them, stretch and grows from farmers(teeny weeny, premium, super stretch, collection) , they are super stretch so they fit around the legs and all. Of course I did use dress's but not much. I also but her in bigger suits with no legs and they fitted overt the straps that go from the chest to leg and don't be sceared to have the stap bend a little it still works. Also big stretchy socks for over the harness.
I have photos if you would like to have a look.

We still did tummy time just put a towl under her chest she hated it on my lap. and two week after been out of harness she rolled over and was crawling by 7 months. So it dosen't mean she will be behind.

I hope this all helps
My DD went into a Von Rosen Splint at 1 day old for 8 weeks. Broke my heart but fixed her right up. You will get use to it. Just make sure you clean and dry underneath the brace properly. We put her in 00 to start with and she went back to 000 when she came out of the brace. Good luck with your little one.
My DD was in pavlik harness from 8 weeks until 6 1/2 months. It was on 24 hours a day, so sponge baths only. I got some cute and funky leg warmers for under her dresses.

If you are only sponge bathing check all her creases for "gunk" - in between toes & fingers, around her hip joints where the legs are bent up, under her chin etc. Once you start looking it's amazing how many nooks & crannies you find!
Our daughter was in a Pavlik harness from 7 weeks to 6 months (with most of the time being weaning, but it's still hard on us parents mentally and emotionally! Your baby's never going to remember this, and you're doing what's best!)

Anyhow, we kept her in onesies the whole time, and when it was cold outside or we found her legs were getting chafed, we cut my hubby's tube socks (cut the feet off) and used them as leg warmers. These worked wonderfully!

The onesies made it very easy to change her diaper, and the tube socks kept her legs warm... she was in her harness all through the winter here (I'm in NY, USA - she was in it nonstop for late December and through January).

The other thing we did was to cut little squares of fleece and put those on the exposed velcro of her harness - her harness stuck to my sweaters, and the fleece prevented this!

Best of luck - if you're looking for other sites, hip-baby.org is another great one!

Sincerely,
Karen & little Amy (9 months old, and ok'd until 1 1/2 yr appointment!)
Thanks for your replies everyone. Has been very helpful. I have been dressing her in long sleeve tops and legwarmers. We are getting used to it now and she seems to be aswell. Although some times she trys to kick her little legs out and gets upset because she cant but she is seeming happy most the time now
Hi All

One year ago I had my first baby, Katija was a breach baby and had hip dysplasia. At the time I had no idea what that meant. Eight weeks later I found out after an ultrasound exactly what we were in for. My tiny little helpless baby was put into a pavlik harness that had to be worn 24/7. Not only was it a shock to find that there was something wrong with my baby but also the disbelieve I could not suitably cloth her any more. As with most parents, Katija was wearing jumpsuits most of the time as they were easy and very comfortable for my little one. When the harness was put on I was left to try and buy baggy pants and ill-fitting tops where her back would be constantly exposed. I was not happy about the whole thing and put myself to work on designing a jumpsuit to work with the brace. Unfortunately I am not an experienced seamstress and it took me many goes to figure out what would work. Eventually I came up with a suitable design that Katija wore almost the whole time she was in the harness. It was easy to put on and take off and it was also a great fit for her with room to kick her legs out and be free to move as much as she could. I also had peace of mind that she was warm and comfortable.
As time went by with lots of visits to the physio, specialists and community nurses, everyone was telling me the same thing. They would always say that I should make these to sell, as it would help lots of parents and babies. The professionals would tell me that my issues with clothing Katija while she was in the brace were felt by parents everywhere and my design could really help. So I decided to look into it. I have been through different manufactures within Australia and finally found one that would and could manufacture my product. Now 6 months down the track I am ready to put my product on the market, Hip Star Babies would finally be born. The Hip Star Babies jumpsuit is a quality product that is 100% Australian owned, designed and manufactured.
If you want to check out the jumpsuit please search ebay for Hip Star Babies and you will see ......
