My 7 week old (2 weeks adjusted) is in hospital, she has been in and out 3 times in 2 weeks and we dont know whats going on. The doctors will not listen to us, I feel like we are hitting our heads against a brick wall...I just need to throw it out there and get some ideas.
She was born at what we thought was 37 weeks. I was induced via cervadil because I had obstetric cholestasis
and they were concerned because all of her growth scans showed that the baby was three weeks behind in growth - specifically her abdominal measurements.
When she was born we had ALOT of trouble with breastfeeding.
She would latch onto the nipple but she would not suck whatsoever.
She lost 12% of her birth weight so we decided to switch to formula because my supply was quite low as well,
and she went great guns - drinking 90ml every 4 hours without fuss every time and she was gaining plenty of
weight. Two weeks ago I was sick and was in hospital for two days so DF and his Mum watched Faith.
The day after I was discharged, Faith had a child health nurse check up and we discovered she had lost 100g
in a week. We put it down to her being out of sorts, or that matt or his mum may not of fed her as well as I
do and stuff...Anyways, from the next day , Faith simply refused to eat. She stopped waking for feeds and was
very lethargic. She would drink about 10ml of formula then fall asleep and would refuse to drink anymore.
She wouldnt suck on the teat, it would just sit in her mouth and if you tried to stimulate her she would vomit everywhere.
We took her into the ED because she had only drank 60ml in about 10 hours and she is meant to be on 90ml every 4 hours.
They admitted her and we were pretty much force feeding her 60ml every 3 hours and it was such a struggle, and
was taking an hours to get that into her. They did urine tests to check for a UTI but it came back clear.
She also had not done a poo in 4 days so we thought she was constipated as she was pooping every day before that.
She eventually did a very small poo, and it wasnt hard and was quite soft so we were unsure about the constipation.
Eventually, in the hospital, she picked up again and started drinking and was back up to the 90ml every 4hrs and was
waking for feeds.
We were discharged on Tuesday and then on Wednesday morning she did the exact same thing, except she was screaming
when you tried to feed her and seemed to be in a lot of pain when you touched her belly, and was bringing her legs
up to her belly, so we thought she was constipated again. DF took her back to the hospital and they did a few routine
bloods tests which all came back clear, and again she had not poo'd in days.
She stayed two night, picked up again and was discharged AGAIN and was drinking 90ml every 4 hours.
She was discharged at midday on Friday, her feed was at 12.30 and again she refused the bottle - she eventually drank 60ml
but it was a huge struggle, but we thought it was a slight hiccup, but she also refused her bottle at 3pm and at 6pm.
I fed her at 10pm and she drank 60ml with little fuss and she also had another 60ml at 2am which she drank too - but both
these times we dream fed her.
Anyways, Saturday morning she refused ALL her bottles all together. She wouldnt even put the teat in her mouth
and would clamp her mouth shut and scream to high heaven every time you even moved her at all! She was screaming so
loudly and so much that she was going blue. By 5pm she had not had a drop of any fluid in 8 hours and we were beside
ourselves so we bundled up the car and headed back to the hospital. When we got there she was floppy and lethargic and was seriously
white as a ghost and wouldnt wake up without great difficulty. She again, had not pooped in 5 days. She was screaming
when you moved her and by now it was 18 hours she had gone without fluid and she wasnt even interested in it.
You would think by then she would be startving!!
Anyways, she was admitted again and is not slowly going back up again - she is now on 60ml every 4 hours but is still
not waking for feeds and still pretty much refuses the bottle - we have to force it into her, and it takes us an
hour to feed her.
The hospital put a supp in her bottom this morning to make her poop and she did a big poo but there has been no
improvement still...
I REALLY want them to do an ultrasound because I believe there is something wrong internally which is
causing her pain and causing her to not drink, especially since we have pretty much had feeding problems her
whole life, and her abdomen was always measuring small whilst she was in the womb.
Sorry its so long, just thought I would tell you the whole story!!
Thanks!
We are using the exact same teats, bottles and formula at home as we do at the hospital so we are doing nothing different
at home than at hospital.
