My poor ds had seizures yesterday :( Rss

Well yesterday my little 1 year old ds woke up in the morning and had a temperature so I gave him panadol and that seemed to bring it down and he seemed fairly OK still playing and laughing with his sisters.
At lunchtime he didn't want his lunch so I took him out of his highchair and sat on the floor with him on my lap to eat my lunch and within a couple of minutes he slumped down and I thought he was headbutting me like he usually does so I picked him up and he was grey and starting to fit. His lips turned blue and he was jerking uncontrollably. He started frothing from the mouth and was completely unaware that I was there. He was also gasping for air. I put him on his side on my bed and dh stayed with him while I got the girls in the car. They were panicking as they saw it all. His first seizure lasted about 5 minutes and then he lay lifeless on the bed dh was ready to do CPR on him and had to breathe a couple of times in him. He then gasped for air and then started having another fit. This next one lasted over 3 minutes. His face was all rigid and he was moaning in pain.He was also sweating profusely. He looked absolutely terrified and did not know who we were.
We then got him in the car to go to the hospital we live rural about 50km from the city and knew it was going to be quicker for us to drive. He continued to have seizures the whole way and his facewas still rigid and he was gasping for air all the way. We finally got to the hospital they raced us straight through and his pupils would not respond to their tests and he didn't even know when I had passed him to the senior emergency doctor. They gave him oxygen gave him more panadol and checked his urine, which took over 4 hrs to get as he'd dehydrated himself so much while he was fitting. He needed over 3 hours in hospital before he even recognized me which was a happy moment for me as I thought my darling boy was going to be majorly brain damaged. The hospital said they think it was caused by a viral infection or his temperature going up too quick. We are home now but they have warned us to expect more seizures over the next few days.
Already we know he's been affected he doesn't recognize favourite toys and also his eyes don't seem to be seeing things the first time he needs to look twice before seeing us.
I'm terrified of it happening again but I know we will get through it if it happens again. I'm so proud of my dh he was wonderful through it all but the poor thing is terrified to sleep at night in case it happened through the night. His body kept jerking uncontrollably through the night. We are of to the doctor again today ds was due to get vaccinations but that won't be happening for awhile now, but he needs to be checked over again.
Sorry this is so long I'm slowly processing what happened and going through my head if I could of done anything different.
Oh wow.
Just, oh wow.
I am so so so sorry this has happened.
Oh God you poor things. Your poor baby.
God i want to cry for you.
I am so sorry.
I hope it never happens again, it was a once off because of the fever, and he has NO long lasting affects from it.
Poor poor little baby. How scared you all must have been.
Big huge majory incredibly long hard hugs to you Babes.

Oh honey!!!

How scary sad your poor DS! You and your DH did an amazing job! Seizures are common in babies when their temp increases quickly to a high grade fever....poor poor little boy sad

Omg I don't even know what to say except I hope your little boy gets better quickly and is back to his joyful self!

Sending lots of love and hugs your way. He's very lucky to have such switched on quick acting parents

Xo
massive hugs to you and your family
that would be very very scary
glad he is a bit better good luck and hope to high heaven it don't happen again

Oh my gosh, that is so scary and awful! You must have been terrified. Well done for getting him to hospital so quickly. One of my friends little girl used to get these when her temperature went up, they had to be extremely vigilant when she was getting sick and keep her cool, give her panadol, watch her closely etc. Hope your wee boy is okay.

That must have been so scary. GBH. Sounds like you both did all the right things. Normally, if a child is having a seizure (and they don't normally suffer from them) you should call an ambulance, but given where you live you definitely made the right decision to drive to the hospital. Hope your son recovers soon. Kids' brains have great plasticity and can recover from injuries much better than adult brains.
Thankyou Skippy, Nic and Unique1 your support and caring words mean so much to me. We are expecting fines to come in the mail as dh did drive fairly fast but not unsafely but we'd drive fast again if we had too again. My girls say yesterday was their worst day ever and they thought he was dieing. So did I he was so grey and lifeless and his seizures lasted so long. He had repeated seisures for probably over 45 minutes. Got a doctors appointment shortly so he'll be having a check up. Thanks again for your support smile
Thanks Anirtak and Cruxy for your kind words.
Yeah next time (hopefully theres not a next time) but the ambulance will meet us 1/2 way. Thanks for caring smile

Hope he is fine at the checkup!
As for the fines im pretty sure you can contest them as it was a severe life or death sort of emergency.
Just get the docotrs to write you a doctors certificate to say what happened and the date and you will be fine.

What a horrible and scary experience for you and your family. I hope your DS is ok and just gets better and stronger! Hope all went ok at the dr's today.
I feel your pain...my daughter had one and it was the scarest thing i had ever seen....She now has been diagnosed with epilepsy too. I hope you and your little one are ok....*hugs*
I feel for you honey. I hope your little boy is better now! On the same day, my 7 month old had a fever of 39.8 (on the home thermometer!), was very grizzly, wouldn't drink etc. I took him to the hospital & was given a sheet stating that fevers are common in babies, what to do at home, was told they don't cater for babies there (ie only had adult blood pressure pump, adult scales etc) - I felt like I wasn't treated seriously when my son has had this occur every few weeks of his life and I'm worried about seizures, especially given I'm epileptic and he already survived a seizure when I was pregnant! So I'm dreading this happening to me and just wanted to say I really feel for you, you did so well in a panic situation & fingers crossed it doesn't happen again! x
oh no!! argh that gave me the chills just reading this sad

I am so sorry for you and your family and I honestly hope things are ok now!

What a scary thing to happen to all of you, especially your poor DS

Great hugs to all of you xxxxxooo
That's no good about your little one, how old is she? that must be very stressful for you too. I was only diagnosed with epilepsy in between miscarriage and successful pregnancy (had another seizure during successful pregnancy) - so worried about my son having seizures especially since his temp regularly hits 40 degrees. Thinking of you hun, all the best smile
Biggest hugs possible to you and your family. How horrible!
I hope your ds is ok and is on the road to recovery. I don't cry much reading peoples post but i couldn't stop crying after reading yours.
Thinking of you and your family and your brave ds. x

DS born 2010

This one really hit me! I've still got tears rolling down my cheeks!

It's almost exactly they same thing that happenned to me as a baby!

Had a fever, started having seizures. Like you we we nowhere close to a hospital. We lived over an hours drive from the hospital.

Dad called the ambulance and he suggested meeting them halfway but they said, "No." They needed them to stay on the phone. There was no such thing as a mobile phone back then. Plus they preferred that I not be moved as I had no movement down one side of my body!

Luckily for my parents (and me) my seizures stopped but I still had no movement down that side of my body for a few hours, plus I was still a bit out of it.

They kept me in for a couple of days, just to make sure!(Think they did things differently back then) I did completely return to normal after a few days but I guess we are all different! Hopeing it will be the same for your little one!

I did continue to have dizzy spells throughout my life but nothing that they could pick up on. At 15 yrs the dizzy spells did become more severe and started turning into more obvious seizures and I was diagnosed with epilepsy but this does not happen to all people. Many people have siezures as baby and don't ever have another problem!

It's scary knowing a seizure is coming on(I get a few seconds notice) but I can only imagine what it would be like to be the parent having to watch your little one going through this knowing that there's nothing you can do!

Thinking of you! It must be such a stressful time for you and your DH.

Wishing you all the best and I hope your DS makes a quick recovery!
Oh how horrible for you, you are very strong and brave and I admire you for your courage. You did everything right, there was nothing else you could have done. My husband has epilepsy and seeing him have seizures is frightening enough I can't imagine my child.
My husband also had febrile convulsions and this is what may have triggered his epilepsy. If you are at all worried I recommended asking for a referral to a neurologist, they are extremely helpful and have helped me understand a lot. I also recommended the epilepsy Australia website (just google it) they have good information regarding seizures and can also put you in contact with support groups. (even though your child may not have epilepsy it still helps talking to people who have/are experiencing similar things).
Stay strong and my thoughts are with you. I have never cried over a forum post before, but your story really touched my heart.
What a horrible thing to go through! You and your DH did an amazing job. I hope everyone is recovering well and that your DD's are also ok.

Thankyou so much everyone it really means alot smile
Thankfully yesterday ds didn't have any more seizures but his temperature keeps fluctuating heaps. We bring it down with panadol and sponging his body and then 1/2 an hour later it's really high again.(On the thermometer it goes down to 36 and then when we measure it again it's back up to 38 and 39 degrees) When we saw the doctor yesterday he gave us alot more information and tips on how to help ds. We explained that he still wasn't his usual self and he said the seizures take so much out of his little body that he would be still very tired and his body would be aching from all the uncontrollable jerking. He also said his head would be hurting alot like if we had a really bad migraine. I told the doctor he was holding his mouth different and seemed to be pulling strange faces and when the doctor checked in his mouth poor little ds had bitten himself badly on his cheeks and his tongue obviously when he started fitting. I had wondered why he was biting me at every bf. Poor Little bub.
We are still processing all that happened and I'm terrified of it happening again but at least if it does We'll be better prepared.
Thanks again for all your kind words smile

I'm so sorry to hear about your wee boy. From what you've explained about the first incident, I don't know that it's a seizure disorder, but a virus as they suggested. The reason I say that is fever is not a typical thing.

As far as the headaches, unfortunately, they're normal for a grand-mal type seizure. Not recognizing you for about 3 hours, is a little longer than I would expect, but after a seizure it's normal. The brain is a bit scrambled and familiar things seem unfamiliar. It's basially "jamais vu" and is the opposite of deja vu.

I understand you are worried about what may be happening as a result of the seizures, but the human body is an amazing thing and the brain has a really crazy way of healing itself even if there has been some minor damage.

Hoping for a speedy recovery and some peace of mind for you guys!
Thanks Silver_Nailpolish. smile
Thanks for your information very helpfull smile I'm feeling much more at ease now he has fully recovered and is back to his usual cheeky self. It's funny his talking and communication has improved so much since his seizure don't know if it's related but am happy anyway.

I'm glad your wee man is doing a lot better. I don't think the seizure improved his communication, but perhaps it brought him out of his shell with the need to be able to talk to you and be understood?

Thanks honey smile It's amazing how much he needs his daddy now for cuddles when before he didn't even want cuddles with him. But it's great and I love that he's communicating with us more smile smile
Thinking of you all and sending love your way. What a hard thing to have gone through, It sounds like you and your dh did all the right things in such a traumatic event, so well done to you.I hope your girls are also feeling better and of course your little man. *hugs*
