bladder and kidney infections 15 week old
My 15 week old son recently got out of hospital from bladder and kidney infections. He has to remain on antibiotics for 4-6 weeks until he has more tests done to see what caused it. the doctor said it could be reflux and if it is could need surgery or to keep an eye on it. We were also told to keep in the back of our minds this may happen again. Im worried he may have to have surgery

Hi smile
My youngest daughter had her first UTI at 2 weeks old. She started daily anti biotics then. Her second UTI was at 7 weeks old (still on anti biotics) She spent 6 nights in hospital for both. During those stays she had ultrasounds etc to find out what was going on. She had hydronephrosis (severely enlarged kidney & ureter) and was in constant pain.
She has duplex kidney on her left side (2 tubes instead of 1 going from kidney to bladder) one of them is deformed, and it had a cyst where it met the bladder, so urine didnt drain out properly (obstruction) and also had some reflux.
It was something that was picked up during pregnancy but they dismissed it saying it was very common & pretty much always corrected by birth.
They wanted to wait til she was over 1 to do surgery, but as it was getting worse quickly, she had surgery at 9 weeks. Under general anaesthetic, they put a tiny camera with a special tiny wire thing and poke holes into the cyst, allowing urine to flow properly. She had a major mishap from the surgery (a different story) but the surgery itself worked & she hasnt had a UTI since.
She now has annual checkups with a urology team at hospital to make sure the cyst doesnt grow back, and also because the top part of her left kidney is almost non functioning.
From what I've learnt along the way, alot dont need surgery, just a wait & see approach.
Hope this helped!

Forgot to add too, she was on antibiotics from 2 weeks old, til 4 months old (once we knew the surgery worked). Some kids are on anitbiotics daily until their toddler years!
