Anyone else bubs had Bronchiolitis? Rss

just want to find out other mum's experiences with their bubs having Bronchiolitis. My 6mth old was diagnosed last thursday and we spent friday night to Monday arvo in hospital because of it. He responded to ventolin so we didn't have to have oxygen, he had all types of tests while we were in there as he kept going febrile (temp over 38.5)quite often, one temp hit 39.4! We are home with me giving him ventolin as our "ventolin weaning plan" states, he should be off the ventolin by the weekend, we hope. We had a check up today with our normal GP who diagnosed us and though he has improved he is still wheezing and has a nasty cough.

My main questions for other parents who have had children with Bronchiolitis is did they become asthmatic later on? if so how bad? How long did it take for them to fully recover? any other information would be so very appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

My youngest DD had it at 9 weeks and spent 3 days in hospital with oxygen treatment and baby panadol, also needed a feeding tube for 24 hours. They tested her nasal mucous and was diagnosed with bronchiolitis RSV.

She got it again at around 8 months but a much milder case and no treatment (other than panadol, vicks on the chest).

She's now 3 and healthy as a horse. I didnt realise a temp of 38 - 39.4 was considered at risk of a febrile seizure - I thought that happened when their temp shot up rapidly and was over 40.

A fever as you described would be fairly par for the course when having bronchiolitis and unfortunately the cough can hang around for a couple of weeks... sometimes longer. The coughing is the worst, hope your little one is better soon.

My son was diagnosed with Bronchiolitis at 9 months (he is now 4). 5 days in hospital on oxygen, kept feeding with no problem. Was on Ventolin via nebuliser in hospital when needed as well. Our paediatrician did advise cough could last a number of weeks and could also be caused by post nasal drip which does also occur with bronchiolitis. A few weeks after leaving hospital at the scheduled check up and as the wheeze was also still present he suspected it was childhood asthma related, (my husband also has asthma which contributed to the Dr suspicion). until things cleared up we started a cocktail of Ventolin and atrovent via nebuliser 4 hourly and were also prescribed Predmix Oral for 3 days(steroid medication often prescribed in such severe cases). The predmix oral worked very well in our case. We continued quite well for a while, however if a cold or virus reared its ugly head we did find we needed to use the Ventolin again as the wheeze would return. After a big asthma attack at age 2 he was put on a daily preventer, pulmicort via nebuliser. This was later change to the turbohaler when he developed the skills and lung capacity to be able to inhale the required dose. After the introduction of the preventer, the use of Ventolin was almost non existent even during times when colds were present and as of January this year he is successfully weaned off the preventer and doing extremely well, we've not touched the Ventolin once. paediatrician did say to us that some children who have childhood asthma can grow out of it and because his appeared very early on he thinks that we have been lucky enough for this to happen in our case. He is a very clever, active and healthy little boy, not on any occasion has any of it held him back in any way. Nevertheless, I have the ventolin with me no matter where I go, just in case!

Hi, My DS had bronchiolitis when he was a baby..... his first cough was at about 4 weeks and then it didn't go away so he had a rough start sad

He was taken to the A&E for the first time for breathing when he was about 8 months old and was put on the nebuliser and sent home with ventolin and redipred. He had bouts of asthma for a year and a half, mainly brought on my coughs and colds. He is now 3 and a half and has not had to use an inhaler for a long time even when he is sick with colds..... but I still keep a watchful eye on him.

His dad also has asthma and he has grown out of it mostly too. It is such a hard time when our little ones are sick. I hope your little person feels better soon smile

DS has had this twice. Once when he was 2 and the other time when he was 3 (almost exactly a year apart he got it). He wasn't hospitalised, we were able to managage it at home with ventolin with a nebuliser. Horrid experiences they were!

He is now 5 years old and doesn't have asthma (thank goodness! his Dad had asthma as a child). I do still worry whenever he gets a bad cold. I'm fearful of it going to his chest - so go to the doctor for reassurance more than anything. But he is fine now.

I hope your baby feels better really soon.
Thanks everyone, your replies have given me some reassurance. He is much better now, we are off the Ventolin but still have a nasty cough, but I've been told it will take a bit longer for it to go away. I'm going to be keeping a close eye on things when he gets sick in the future that's for sure! Thanks again!

hi my little guy had bronchitis at 5 weeks and was in hospital for 4 days he was on oxygen with tubes up his noses for 3 days. and now at 8 months he has asthma and is on a nebuliser 3 times a day. you learn to manage it and work around it. hoping that he might grow out of.
thanks for your reply cassiebabe, we were lucky he responded to the ventolin otherwise we would've had to have oxygen too! I do hope your little one grows out of it, we have actually just been at the docs today as his cough has gotten worse again and he has had really bad nose blockages, plus he just had a perforated ear drum, poor little man, so we may be back on the ventolin, might even end up with asthma as a result but we will just have to wait and see.

Hiya

My wee boy has had bronc multiple times at ages 6 months, 9 months, 10 months, 13 months, 16 months, 17 months and 18 months (which was only a few days ago). He's been admitted to hospital each time and the treatment varies depending on the severity of the attack which is always brought on by a cold.

It is quite likely that he has asthma given how many times he has had bronc (which is now called Viral Induced Wheeze after the age of one). We also have a family history for asthma, hayfever and eczema.

The doctors told me that it is difficult to tell whether or not they will have asthma as only time will tell. That's not to say that they won't grow out of it at a later stage though.

We've got our little man on a preventer inhaler now which will hopefully reduce the severity of the attacks and the number of hospital admissions. grin

We are close to being experts on this topic now, so if you have any questions feel free to ask. grin
Thanks Melissa, We are actually now back on the ventolin as he has started to wheeze again. I'm hoping we might contain any bronc that might have been coming on by using the ventolin, at least that's what our doc is hoping. No temps so far so I'm hoping we caught it in time to prevent any hospital visits. I'm just always on the lookout for the wheezing and other signs now and take him to the doctor when i think he's gotten worse. poor little man but I'm hoping this will help.

good luck with your little man, it's good to hear from others in the same position, not so good you are in this position but it gives me a realistic idea of what to expect, about what can happen down the track.

thanks again.
