Urgently need some help Rss

I'm stressing out big time, I have a 5 and half month old son, he has been refusing milk only eating small amounts of solids and is hard to settle, I'm continually trying to settle him throughout the day, should I take him to the doctors? Have been giving him nurofen to settle him but it just doesn't seem like enough everyone says he is teething but does a teething baby really scream that much that the only way you can settle them is by walking them around outside patting them on the back? Am A first time mum and have moved away from home so I'm really struggling to find out whats wrong
I would say that a visit to the doctor can't hurt and if it were me I would. If he is refusing his milk then he can get dehydrated very quickly. Is he still having wet nappies? Have you taken his temperature? If you are worried and don't think it's normal then trust your instincts and take him to the doc. Hope he gets better for you soon.

Yeah still having wet nappies not as much as he would have, doesn't seem to have a temp

I have friends in my coffee group struggling with the same problem apparently due to teething which can make eating for bubs excruciatingly painful. Are your babies gums red and swollen? They have tried putting bongela in the babies mouth 5 mins before feeding. There are also little net like feeders you can buy at the supermarket that you can put the baby food into and freeze, they have a handle on them that the baby can hold onto and then they can chew and suck o nthe ice block which gives them nutrition whilst soothing the gums. Hope this helps - otherwsie as stated before see your doc or call plunketline smile

It's really your call. I would take him at least then you have peace of mind knowing that it's not something else that you have missed. They can give him a good checkover and if they say it's nothing just teething then at least you know. He may just be feeling unwell and in a few days may get a runny nose and a cold.

My main concern is him not drinking milk. Solids at his age are not an important part of his nutrition so if he wasn't eating solids and still drinking milk it wouldn't be a concern but he really needs his milk.

As I said it's worth it just for your peace of mind. smile

I will be sure to have a look for them in the shops his gums are definitely swollen and red and I'm not to sure but it feels as though you can feel his tooth when you touch his gums it feels really sharp
Ok if his gums are swollen and red and you can feel a tooth, you don't need to take him to the doctor unless he shows signs of illness. He doesn't have a temp, so that's a pretty good indicator that he's ok, just uncomfortable.

Regular panadol/Nurofen, bonjella, teething rings or iceblocks is about all you can do to help. Other than that - try not to stress. These times come, then they go and all will be back to normal again.

If you're really worried still, take him to the chemist and ask the pharmacist any questions you might have. Doctors waiting rooms are FULL of mums who have kids that doctors actually wont prescribe any treatment for things like teething or colds. A pharmacist is also highly trained and a wealth of knowlege... and would tell you if they thought you needed to go to the doctor.

You can also call Health direct (providing you're not in Vic) on 1800 022 222 , they have doctors available to talk to on the phone.

Hope he's feeling better soon.

There is a product called Weleda - it is a powder and you rub it on their gums. Apparently it works wonders. You can get it from a health food store. I brought it for my daughter but she wasn't teething she just had a really bad cold. Also, try the frozen rings, it might relieve the swelling. Good luck grin

If you can feel a tooth coming through then it is most likely teething. I use the brauer teething relief and it is really good. I have also just caved and got a amber necklace (never thought I would). Not sure if it works or not but figured for $20 it can't hurt. smile

We got the amber teething necklace and our DD changed to a completely different girl in 3-4 days. She has barely caused any probs with teething so we are so glad we got it, (although very sceptical at time) We do resort to Brauer teething relief when she is really struggling and doesn't want to eat and she is ready to eat within 2mins, it is like a miracle. Also she seems to know it makes her better as since she has started talking and not eating she will say "mouth sore.....medcine...!!". Watch putting frozen stuff in mouth as can burn skin. Try small quantities of cool milk. Possibly getting over production of saliva with teething which is not settling well on tummy when he has large amounts of milk. Even 20-30mls every hour is better than nothing and probably won't need to do for more than 2-3 days Good Luck...
