How long is too long - baby poo Rss

I know this has probably been asked a hundred times, but I would love some advice from anyone...

My little 5 month old girl had, according to me, diarrhoea, she had liquid runny green poo 4-5 times a day for about 3 weeks, I took her to the doctor who said it was normal breastfed baby poo. I still think it wasn't normal as she has been doing a poo once a week before that.

Anyway she hasn't done anything now for 2 weeks, and I know it is normal for breastfed babies to go longer without doing it, so I am just wondering how long is too long before I should start to get worried, or how long should it take to return to normal bowel motions? She is still exclusively breastfed, haven't started solids yet.

Thanx smile

Is she uncomfortable and windy?? My son went for 4-5 days without a poo and he was so windy and uncomfortable so I gave him so cooled boiled water (about 50ml) with a teaspoon of brown sugar. Then I fed him (breastfed) and he did a huge poo. If that doesn't work or you don't want to try it you could try lying her on her back and bringing her knees up to her chest and doing cycling motions and keeps pushing her thighs up against her tummy. It will help get the wind out and possibly get her to finally poo. My partner also used to massage our son's tummy in a clockwise movement to help him get his wind and poos out but I don't like the idea as it made our sons squirm and sometimes cry.

You could also ring a health line to get more suggestions, that's all I can think of.

The longest my dd went without a poo was 2 weeks, and I was told that's normal. She was always an infrequent pooper too, having the opposite with my son!

My son was having green poo's too for a few days, and I asked a midwife why the change in colour - she said that it's when the milk is not getting fully absorbed properly, and this can be caused my something that mum is eating which might be causing a bit of tummy upset.

If your dd has had these green poos for 3 weeks, maybe her body has just been doing a bit of a catch up and absorbing super well. Apparantly breast milk can pretty much be 100% absorbed and leave no waste if the baby needs all of it. She might be having a growth spurt too which would have her absorb more.

You could try the boiled water and sugar, but with dd I always just waited and she'd eventually do one! If she seems uncomfortable prehaps then look at what you can do to help her along.

Thank you, yes she is very windy (very smelly wind) and seems uncomfortable, although she has a cold at the moment so is a bit grumpy anyway. Thanks for the suggestions, i'll give that a try.

I found that if my daughter hadnt done a poo in awhile but was showing signs of being uncomfortable I use the Brauer Stomach calm it is all natural and it works a treat - if she is breast fed baby her poos are bound to change all the time depending on your diet if your really concerned seek advice from a different doctor! Good luck smile

is she teething? as our daughter has those types of poos before she cut a tooth!
