You poor thing, I HATE mastitis! I can't believe an infection can come on so quick and make you so sick, it's awful!
I just got over my 4th time of having it since my twins were born last Oct. and I had it 3 times with DS1 (really bad with him so bad pussed green and needed hospitalization for IV antibiotics and pain relief).
My twins were 12days old and still in SCN when I got it first with these bubs and when I went to the doctor explained my situation and long history of it and we agreed that a script with multiple repeats made sense (so I could start antibiotics asap once a warning symptom comes up). As a pharmacist I do not like taking antibiotics and hate their overuse but with 3chikdren under 2 (at the time and 3 under 2.5 now, with husband interstate until July) I can't be sick and out-of-action plus the earlier and more aggressive you treat the quicker it's finish and the less severe infection is. I highly recommend this, I always have some antibiotics in the house now so I can start in middle of night if that's when it starts rather than waiting to get in to doctor then waiting at pharmacy etc.
I also highly recommend cabbage leaves, I always buy a cabbage when shopping now just in case and keep in fridge. It is breast shaped and helps reduce swelling, pain, redness and 'draws' infection (often get pus in the leaf when time to change). I put it in bra as soon as it starts and change frequently, a wet nappy in freezer also works if nothing else but cabbage is better.
Also we get taught to help mum trigger identify ie try to find cause and it's not always from bub e.g my first breast feeding in public place and didn't sanitize arm of chair and breast touched (within an hrs had passed out with fever and chills), cracked nipples from pumping while bubs in SCN, last time was because of wet shirt/bra from leaning into bath to bath children and didn't change shirt... I've found it's always something new because I'm so careful not to repeat mistake
I feel for you and I hope that you never get it again, wouldn't wish it on anyone. wink
Had similar problem with DD (3 times). Each episode of Mastitis got worse fevers and it was terrible. I ended up having ultrasound treatment on my breasts to try and unblock the ducts.

With DS I have had it once. Probably as I know to slow down a bit and can pick up when it is starting to emerge and start him feeding more from the breast and pumping the other breast.

I have found that it has occurred three times in the same spot, being a place where I have had a suspect breast lump prior to having kids. It was a fatty deposit and the duct must be a bit touchy.

So go to your Physio for some ultrasound as a preventative treatment.
