How often should I feed 6week old?? Rss

Hi ladies, all is going well with ds but went to the clinic nurse yesterday and they always put ideas in my head lol she said I'm feeding too often but I've been feeding on demand and it's been working for us! I have no idea how many feeds he would have in a day but he is content and a good weight so I think I should keep going as is but I can't stop thinking about all the things she said sad

How often did you/ do you bf your 6 week old?

Thanks for reading!

Definately on demand. That's why I never went to the clinics. They put silly ideas in people's heads and wonder why some women don't stick to bf. Its sad.

Keep doing what your doing. Sounds like he is doing great. smile

From memory, and I breastfed on demand, probably every 2-3 hours during the day, and then at night time, he'd sleep one 6hr stint, and then another 3-4 hour stint, so only a couple of feeds at night. But I'd have fed him at least 8 times. I think I was feeding him when he woke, then he'd play for a bit (well, awake time) then I'd give him another feed to get him to sleep.

Whatever works for you. I guess as long as he gets the hindmilk, gets the chance to empty out at least one breast.

Gosh, 6 weeks already!!! That's going quick! How's it all going?

+1. The amount of times I came out of the clinic in tears or almost gave up breastfeeding because of those nurses saying you should only feed every 3-4 hours!! This time I think I'll be boycotting the clinics. You're doing a great job Tallulah smile

I demand fed my little one as well but around 6 weeks she was feeding every 1.5 to 2 hours, she could never feed a lot at a time... she is 6 months now and still don't go longer than 3 hours without feeding.

I always think that I can't go 4 hours without having a drink or something to eat so how can I expect that from a tiny baby? Like someone else said as long as he is feeding enough to get all the hindmilk and not just snack feeding, then all is good.

Just wanted to addd, not all clinics put silly ideas in new mum's heads. I had problems with breastfeeding, and the nurse in my town is great. She'd help with attachment, and be there to talk anytime. She never discouraged me at all. And I'm still going!
Thanks girls!! They drive me mad lol now I'm seeing why it didn't work out with my dd- they said the same things and I listened sad this time things are amazing and as much as I swore before I got in there that I'd take the info I wanted and I'd leave what I didn't need im still doubting myself lol

Thanks chicks, we're feeding pretty much every two hours so sounds normal wink thank you so much!

Cowgirl mumma, so glad your nurse helped you, great to hear it! This lady yesterday was great and so nice and helpful, I just think the info they are told to tell mummas is not that helpful, it's very structured- they don't advise to go with the flow and I think that's what we need to be told lol that's the ladies I've been to but I'm so glad your lady was supportive!! And 6 weeks- yes it's crazy isnt it lol I can't believe it!! How are you and the family? Xx

Hey chick! Typical... I drop past just quickly and I cant help myself! Lol

My little man is 3 months now & still feeding 2 hourly. You can never feed them too much. They will take what they need and want. At 6 weeks there were many days where I fed my boy hourly!

If he's doing the right things, happy & you're happy.... then have confidence that you're doing the right thing . I find that a lot of nurses tend to give advice according to what they did rather than giving facts and letting parents make their own choices from the info given. It's silly but its human nature, bit like on here people can get very vocal because they feel a topic threatens their way of parenting. Just remember that health professionals don't know it all, they are human just like you and their opinions are influenced in the same way as everyone else. If another mum said the same thing to you would you listen?

Ok I will resume my holiday break now. Seeyas! tongue

Yeah, we're all going good - well as good as we can be when DS and myself are laying low with the cold since Sunday, and still feel not right. But that's part of winter sometimes.... There may have been things that different ones have told me, but if I didn't agree with it, I didn't pay heed! lol

That's what I was trying to do with the advice but it got the better of me lol

It was every 2-3 hours from memory. I would never go longer than 3 hours without feeding him during the day (and sometimes a feed to sleep too) and night was whenever he woke smile

Chalys!!! You're prob gone now but I was just thinking about you- in a totally non stalkerish way tongue was just thinking of everyone leaving and was hoping you were really coming back laugh

Glad you dropped by, thanks for taking the time to reply! Enjoys your hols with the kids smile
