I have a 10 week old baby and he has been on s26 AR from week 2 he was also put on Zantac buy my GP i would really like to try and go back to s26 gold and keep going with the zantac as the thickened formula is a pain to mix properly (unless im doing something wrong) would this be ok to try
AR formula
Hi there
The decision of what formula to put your son on is one which only you can make. I suspect your GP has put you onto an AR formula because it is generally harder to reflux than the normal ones, but if you aren't having any success with it, perhaps you could talk to your doctor again (I think that's important if you have any concerns actually).
If you wanted to continuing trying thickened formulas, you could also try using S26 gold and then mix in a commercial food thickener like karicare food thickener, (the directions are on the pack). I find it is easier to mix this into a little bit of formula with a whisk, and then add it to the bottle. Using a thickener means you can vary the thickness of the feed too, which you cant do with AR formulas.
Your GP may be happy to just try using the Zantac, if that is what you would prefer.
Also remember that if this doesnt work, that there are alternative formulas out there for reflux children, as well as other treatments. Alot of children are allergic to cows milk proteins / soy proteins so it may not be the density of the liquid it maybe the actual formula which could be upsetting him too. Formulas like Neocate / Elecare can be used to help in these instances. If you are interested in these formulas then they are available on prescription only.
I hope that helps
