Eczema and chlorinated water Rss

Hi

I'm just wondering if there is any link to a flare-up of eczema and chlorinated water? My son is 10 months and loves the water, but each time we go swimming in a pool, he comes out in little patches of eczema.

He was diagnosed with infantile eczema at 4 months, but it thankfully disappeared by about 5 months. I'd love to continue swimming lessons with him but am not sure if its worth it!!

Looking forward to a reply!

Hi there, My 10 month old son suffers from eczema too and chlorinated water does make it flare up. I just make sure I slather aqueous cream on him before he goes into the water and that helps. I also give him a bath as soon as we get home to remove any of the chlorine that is left on his skin. Hope that helps:)

Dear Fishwoman

Chlorine can certainly trigger an eczema flare-up. Try using a suitable barrier cream before he goes into the water, such as sorbolene or Vaseline, wash after swimming and apply a suitable moisturiser. Remember to always try products in a small area first and rinse in clear water immediately if an adverse reaction occurs.
