My 17 month old son Baily, gets a rash on his face when i use most sunscreens. Ive also noticed he sometimes gets small dry patches of skin here and there. He has large areas of dry bumpy skin on his arms and legs however it doesnt seem to cause him any discomfort. It may just be that he has dry skin. There is a strong family history of skin conditions in my family. I myself sufferd from severe eczema from the ages of (aprox) 2 to 16 (I still have scars from it!). Then when i fell pregnant with Baily i suddenly started to develop what i thought was eczema again but i now think its more likely psorisis which there is also a family history of! Is it likely that Baily's sensative skin will develop into eczema and if so can i do anything to stop it or is it something that is un-preventable?
Is he likely to get eczema?
Dear Baily’s mum
Many babies have very dry skin – there is a skin condition called ichthyosis which just means ‘very dry skin’. Use lots of a suitable moisturiser on the dry patches. The difference between eczema and other skin rashes is the extreme itchiness of eczema. Psoriasis is a completely different skin condition – it would be a good idea to obtain a proper diagnosis from your GP.
