is my 5 yr old overweight?? Rss

my 5 yr old dd is 120cm and weighs 31 kilos, the doctor told me she is overweight for her age and i should see a dietician. how much does your 5 yr old weigh??

actually mine will be 5 next week but he is 17 kg, and he has gained 3 kg since feb since having his tonsils removed, i thihgh that was a lot to gain but apparently itss good. My 10yo DD is just over 33kg
My 5 year old is 23 kg and I've been told he's the perfect weight for his height.
hi!! i don't have a five year old but my ten year old weighs 30kg and my 3 year old weighs 15kg. my lovely dd is a little fatty and nearly weighs 7kg. but i love all of her rolls!!!
to you does she look overweight?

does she look overweight?
unfortunately i would have to say yes, and after reading how much others weigh then yes she is overweight. that really disgu;sts me as i totally blame myself for this. i don't know if its a genes thing as both myself and dh are big. her 7 yr old brother weighs 24 kilos. its only in the last year that she has gained it. she is always hungry and has started to help herself from the pantry when i'm busy. and yet she runs around heaps, dances to her dvd's so its not like she isn't active.
i feel embarassed that i may have to take her to see someone as i feel i have let her down as her mum

at 120 your little one is tall for a 5yr old. According to the blue book 97% of 5yr olds are less than118cm.
And according the blue book 97% of 5yr olds weigh less than 25kg.

Your child isn't that overweight, but maybe you could take this opportunity to check what they are eating and how much activity they are getting. All kids need at least 1hr of active play a day - and most schools and child care centres don't allow active play incase the child hurts themselves.

So invest in some swings, bikes or trampolines or little athletics or swimming anything with a risk of a broken limb is good excerise. Make sure they are having 2 serves of fruit and 5 of veges and no more than one cake/biscuit/chips etc a day - and try to make the treat homemade like rock cakes/fruit cake etc where you control the size and amount of fat/sugar. There you go - dietician assessment done.
hi belinda, yes she is certainly tall for her age, she towers over the other kids at kinder and is nearly as tall as her older brother.
i always know what she is eating as its me giving it to her, she loves her fruit and vegetables but also loves the naughty things, which are restricted.
we are getting a tramp for xmas but she hasn't quite the concept of riding a bike yet and the nearest swimming pool to us is a fair distance away. she is an active child but i do think it could be a gene thing as i said in my earlier post, its really only happened in the last 18 months and it was so gradual i didn't really notice it till i about 6 months ago. but i guess all i can do is watch her and hope that maybe she can lose some weight, it sounds terrible saying i hope my 5 yr old can lose weight.

my son was 5 in may and is 121cms tall and 25kg in weight you can see his fat rolls and I to would love him to loose some weight. my other son is 22 months and 80cms tall and only 10kg.

Hi daughter is 5 years and 3 months and she is 20 kgs and about 115 cms tall. I think she is on the taller side as everyone keeps telling me but she hasn't put any weight on for about 6 months.....she keeps getting taller but stays the same weight.

Mum of three amazing people

ds1 is 6 yrs old. He's 120ish cm and weighs about 30kg. He was 27kg for ages but broke his arm and packed on the weight as his activity was restricted. At 5 he was 110+ and around 27 kg which I thought was on the heavy side. His weight stayed around the same for ages but he just kept growing and growing. He's inherited 'efficient' genes too but even more telling he's got his dad's taste buds and goes straight for the fats and carbs. It's a fine balance between giving them a complex about body image and keeping check on the foods they're eating. Easiest way for me is to not have them in the house and not let dp cook. I'll bet it's even harder for girls, def hear them talking about each other's size and weight at school.
Hi cherezel79, my 5 yr old dd is 120cm and weighs 33 kilos. Well it fluctuates between 31 and 33.
She now wears size 10 in clothing. I also have a 7 years old who is 130cm tall and weighs 21 kg. They both eat from the same table but I guess it must come down to genes and theres not much that we can do. I took her to the nutritionist and we are now all on gluten free and organic diet. He said that you should limit cabohydrate and sugar intake and increase protein intake. Ive tried everything. We have a trampoline, swing set a pool right next to our house and she goes to dancing classes. She goes to school now and of course as any parent I also fear that she will be bullied. It really hurts and frustrates me that nothing that I do works and I feel like a bad parent. I am open to any suggestions and tips out there and willing to try everything...
I don't have a 5 year old, so I cannot comment there, however before you see a dietician do you think its worth checking for diabetes?
