Going off the homeschooling thread Rss

I'm just curious as one post stated that class sizes are 30 or so kids... I havent encountered this in my DDs 2 years of schooling thus far.

Are there class sizes of 30 kids?

What is the number in your childs class?
ds2 and ds3 are in a composite 4/5/6 class with 28 kids , the school also has a 2/3/4 class with about the same amount of kids and the K/1 class has around 18 or so. ds1 is in a different school in a straight year 6 class with 28 kids. The catholic schools all do team teaching with up to 90+ kids in one room with several teachers and aides

When I went to school I was always in classes of 30ish kids.

When I went to school I was always in classes of 30ish kids.

nsw public schools have limits: 20 in kindy, about the same in year 1 and then goes up to 24 and 30 in year 5 and 6

DD is only in Kindy but there are 20 in her class.
I remember when I was in school there were always about 30 to a class.
It depends on the grade and the type of building (eg purpose-built or demountable) as to how many kids can be in a class. Last year I had 32 year 4s in a demountable classroom. The class numbers can also be pushed over limit (within reason) at the principal's discretion if needed (for example if the class is full but a new child enrols).
In answer to your question, yes there are class sizes of 30 kids to one teacher.... which is why I wrote what I did, I am not in the habit of speaking untruths just to maximise the impact of my statement wink

I live in Nz and this is some of the issues we are having regarding education at the moment,

My blog, take a peek into my world

In SA each school is put in a category thus giving each so much money/funding. This is based on the types of families that live in the area, average salary, socio econmics etc etc. I work in very harsh area and we can have up to 21 in junior primary and 25 in upper primary (but usually less). This is due to many many behaviours and learning difficulties. My son goes to a public school in a very nice area and he has 25 in his reception and there is up to 30 in upper primary.
I have taught a reception class and had 28 brand new receptions and ive also had 11 children in a class in all the same school. Each year flucuates as children come and go and move schools. You never know what you will get. (ie last year i started with 21 and ended up with 17, i had 7 children leave the school and 3 newies start)
Depends on the school, and what kind of teacher:student ratio they can provide based on the funding the receive.

I have a friend who is a new entrant teacher. Starts the year with 5 or so kids, gets to about 17- 20 by the end of the year.
I also know someone else who co-teaches the same year level. There are always two teachers present and they have 30 students between them.

These are just two examples but I know that class sizes can creep up there... (especially under crappy new legislation in NZ but I wont go on about that haha)

My DD1's class totals 18 kids this year but being from a small town, it deends on how many kids are enlisted that year to how big the class will be. Last year's pre-primary had 2 classes of about 15 kids and this year they have 1 1/2 classes of pre-primary.

Growing up in country Vic, we only ever had class sizes of about 22 kids.

I think there's around 24 in DS's class - that's just a guesstimate, but I know there'd be less than 30.

My post wasnt intended as a slight on you, am aware you are in NZ though and was curious if there are 30 kids to a class here as havent come across it.

Very interested by all the replies, I had no idea there was classes this size, as far as I'm aware where I am the limit in primary is 22.
