gifted...? Rss

Sorry Chiliwoman, but I have to disagree. Although I know you were kind of joking smile Giftedness is genetic - there is no other way your son could be gifted - plus doesn't your daughter do wierd things with her food and have other gifted traits too? - plus I could pick you easily as a gifted person from when I first joined this forum, and before your son was even identified as gifted through his school testing.

haha
thanks windmill - it was a joke - as in we werent smart enough to see that our own child was gifted.. LOL.

but you are correct, both DH & i have high IQ's - falling into the 'highly gifted' ie: intellectual category.. so, not a genius - although i do tell DH that i am cause he is 2 IQ points behind me, so i am clearly way smarter than him... LOL

My girl eats weird combinations of food - if that's what your talking about, but i dont think that she is going to be anywhere near as 'gifted' as DS - she is a completely different personality type, but she is showing some of the same traits as DS, but sometimes i look at her & think OMG - you are soooo blonde sometimes, but meh - she's only 5, so only time will tell - she's bored in preprimary already, but at least i know what to do this time..

I do not know that much about testing, and I have not tested my kids and likely never will unless they ask. But I would suggest Gifted Minds if you are interested, IQ is also relatively accurate, a gifted psych will also be able to help and there are all types of tests which I do not know anything about.

I'll come on later with a link to Gifted Minds, you could search though probably easily.

cheers windmill your always so helpful smile

Hello Gypsy Kylz,

Yep, i do mean "testing" as in IQ testing smile

We did it to try and get early entry to school, but it also helped us to understand our child better.

As far as i am aware, for a school to do anything to accomodate a gifted child, (For eg. Grade Skip, Subject acceleration, G&T programs ect,) testing has to be done...

I was told by the NSW Dept of education that for early entry i would have to start the testing, (to allow enough time for processing), at least 3 terms before my child was to start school.

oh ok, i dont know if ill start her early, im thinking of homeschooling maybe anyway and have already started kinder level maths and phonetics (5yr old) so i guess if i did put her in a mainstream school she might get bored. will have to remember this if it ever comes up, thanks smile

so is it a sign that they may be gifted if they have obsessive or odd habits or traits? my DD is very funny with things being 'out of order' so things like stacks of books or coaster must be lined up and ornaments and toys i often find evenly spaced in order from biggest to smallest lined up along window sills huh shes been doing that since she was about 15months, even at cafes and other peoples houses! lol

if you dont mind me asking, whats considered a high IQ? ive only ever done various computer tests but never an official one and i got between 127-131 on them huh but i did them for the fun of it lol

cheers windmill your always so helpful smile

obsessive habits can be a sign of giftedness, but not on its own - IYKWIM. Your girl sounds like she will fall into the gifted category... she's a smart little cookie. there was a link posted in the other thread about signs of giftedness - have a quick look. There are so many conditions that cross over in this area - some autistic spectrum children are actually VERY intelligent. Depends on what you would do with the information if you were to have it confirmed that she is gifted

as for what is a high IQ - My link may be of assistance - for a very generalised view. If you scored 127-131 on a computer test, then you are also considered gifted!! congratulations!
ahh, no, it was in this thread... LOL

Hi hun, that is considered gifted smile So you are gifted.

On the other thread I linked an e book and there is a section in there which classifies levels of giftedness, starting 125-135 I think. Maybe go and have a look. The e book would probably be helpful to you anyway for your daughter. I would say she is gifted and if you are then that leaves little doubt to me that she would be. It is really good to know so that if issues arise that makes your child really different, then you can realise that it is actually normal behaviour for gifted people, just not normal behaviour compared to the majority.

Just had a look at this link.

When I got to the point "Does not tolerate fools gladly", I could not help but think this applied to you Chiliwoman grin

Also to Gypsy Kylz, on the earlier point of needing testing to accomodate for gifted kids, I am not sure that this is definitely true. Certainly individual teachers who have any knowledge of giftedness, or even who simply can see that a child has different needs, should accommodate for a gifted child without having to see any "proof" of test scores. Tests i'm sure would help as gifted education is not a part of a teaching degree - at least, gifted as nature not nurture is not talked about - and so teachers are often extremely hostile to the idea. Many don't even believe it exists, despite specialised teaching degrees existing for giftedness. So, I suppose they must think that there is a university degree in existence for a make-believe thing....wink But anyway, test scores are not the only way to have your child helped. You would just need to search for an open-minded teacher or principal. I have concluded that homeschooling is the best option for us, but many gifted kids get through school and come out on the other side with a love for learning still intact (although I believe it will have been dampened most of the time by the time you are finished school).

laugh

am i that obvious windmill?? LOL Fools & ignorance - ergh.
Ds1 knew the alphabet at 2, and not in order. ie if you pointed to any letter either upper or lower case he knew it as well as the sound it made.He could spell his name and his brothers names at 2.At 3, friends came over with their baby whose name was Rhys.Brad said, R-E-E-C-E, spelling out the name . The friend said Brad that's really clever but his name spelling is R H Y S !At the time he was 3 with a friend Reece.
He has not had any 'formal' testing apart from sitting a test for a spot in a selective class for year 5& 6.We are waiting for the results for an academically selective high school. He has always been very bright at school to the point of boredom and now in a class with others at his ability he has to actually make more of an "effort", not just coast along.I am a bit tired to make sense today.
