Any tips for taking antibiotics? Rss

After my son tried to eat a coathanger (explaination on another post), he got an infection. He has been given a liquid antibiotic. He had a bit off the spoon and hated it. I ended up with the syringe down the throat. Its bad enough having a sick baby, without getting them more upset. Have to do this 3 x day for at least a week.

Any tips??
my girl used to be a horror for any medications... had to sit on her and force it in and I hated it.

These days it's a breeze. I have a pot of lollies which only comes out if she needs medicine and the bribe works every time with no fuss. smile

At 10 months old it might be a bit young to start that so the only other thing I can suggest is that you make sure he doesn't see you draw it up and give it on a spoon rather than a syringe. To kids wary of medication the syringe = instant mouth clamp!! lol

Does he like pureed apple? Give him a spoonful, then sneak the next spoon of antibiotic in followed really fast by more apple.

i let ds hold the botttle of whatever he is having antibiotics or nurofen then he usually lets me squirt it in his mouth while he is trying to put the lid on try get it off usually works
Unless the antibiotics requires to be taken before food, include it inside the pureed food or water.

Hope you can come up with something soon.
Thanks. Tried to hide in food and drinks but he seems to have super sensitive taste buds and refuses any more. Even his favourite yogurt!

Used the syringe and he clamped his mouth shut! Any I did get in, he spat out - little bugger. Eventually got some swallowed but its hard to tell how much. Will try lots of distraction methods! Giving him the bottle is a good idea...

I had a bit more success today. Sat him up in front of the TV and squirted a little at a time while he was distracted by Giggle and Hoot! He got a bit irritated by the end of it but didn't scream and spit it out - so that's an improvement!
Give him the syringe to hold - he will no doubt put it straight into his mouth!!
When he does, just quickly squirt a little bit into his mouth.

Wait a little while longer and he will probably put it back into his mouth - squirt some more in! lol

They really are that predictable! My kids have always been super easy to give medicine to because I have always lets them hold the syringe smile

That is exactly what I was going to say! In fact, with my DD I find I don't even need to push the end of the syringe in, she can actually just suck the medicine out.

I think this approach helps because they feel like they have some control over the situation and they are not being force-fed.
DS is on his 3rd lot of antiobiotics in 7weeks, he has taken the last 2 by spoon, but the dr warned me this one tastes YUCK and he hates it. So i have to sit him on my knee, one arm holds his arms and chest, the other attempts to get it into his mouth - I don't wait for him to open, I push the syringe in down the side so I squirt between teeth and check. He never spits it out and on the rare occasion he holds he lips tight, I block his nose til he opens. It is over so quickly!

If I then have to give him pamol, I use a spoon and rub a bit on his lips so he knows what it is and that he likes it.
