pap smear results came back with abnormal cells

Hey i recently had a pap smear and the results came back with abnormal cells, my doctor said she wants to repeat the test in july, i had it done in jaunuary which means thats nearly a 6 month wait and im a little bit scared to wait that long so i was wondering if i should get my results and take them to a specialist. im mainly worried as my sister inlaw was diagnosed with cervical cancer at 19 so she knows what its like to go through all this, thankfuly she survived it, but the downside is its very hard for her to naturaly concieve now.


do you think im over reacting or should i get a second opinion?
Anyone else had this issue??

Considering you're concerned and considering your family history, then yes, definitely get another opinion - or even get another smear done earlier.

A 6 month wait seems a bit long? I'm assuming she knows of your sister, so surely a shorter waiting time would be more appropriate??

One of my tests came back with abnormal cells a few years ago & had to wait 6 months to have another one, then yearly after that for 2 years. Longest 6 months ever!! I was so worried. But it turned out to be fine. Just unlucky to have a few unnormal looking cells on the scraper I guess. Apparently it can happen.

If you are really worried though, it wouldnt hurt to get a second opinion. Even just a chat to a different GP to see what they think you should do.

Hiya, four years ago I too had abnormal cells present and they vary. the next procedure from a pap smear is a colposcopy, basically they just go a bit further and take a bit more to test. I had mine done through the gynae clinic at my local hospital. This test showed I had squamous cells and CIN I and CIN II present, cancerous crap basically. From there the next procedure is a LLETZ (Lower Loop Excise something something) Again going further and taking bigger sample, a portion of the cervix, I was knocked out for that procedure. But with all the worry of it my last sample came back clear, fine, no bad cells at all!!! So the pap and colp just happend to get the bad bits and there was nothing more to find. I NEVER go over one year without a pap smear now smile So don't stress I say, it depends what was found and how much, but if it worries you get a copy of the results and discuss further with your GP or another source, the clinic sisters are really helpful I find.

I too had very similar to this PP resulting in CIN III cells present. I too ended up having Lletz treatment.
Its weird that hey are waiting 6 months to test again. When my original pap came back abnormal, I was sent to have the next procedure (colposcopy) done within a few weeks.
Not to worry you, but I'd have another one done or go to different doctor.I'm sure its all fine.. Everything ended up being fine for me. I had a check-up 3 months later, and all was normal. Another 3 months after that I got pregnant. I still have regular paps every 12months, and am currently pregnant with baby #2 and had no problems...

It depends what they clased the abnormal cells I have a lower grade lesion present but have to wait out the 12months as that is how long a flare up of the HPV virus that casues this abnormality to occur will last. Anything done sooner will not be a conclusive result. Of course you can always get a second opinion.

she might be wanting to wait because its quite normal to get abnormal cells. Your cervical cells change a lot but not because its an issue. Its just what they do. It doesn't help the stress levels though, so you do what you need.
Although the downside is a second opinion may return the same result and the only way they will know is by waiting or doing further testing.

So stressful though and I want to give you a massive hug. Waiting is shite.

Hey, if I were in your position I'd want a repeat pap smear - reason being that abnormal results can come back from the pap smear not being done correctly... and if that were the case you'd have a stressful long 6 months ahead for no reason at all. If the second one slaying came back abnormal, then I would wait the 6 months. Obviously the abnormal cells must have been a low grade risk if they're happy to wait.
