Hi
Im single mum of 2 young kids and I've been renting on my own for a little over a yr. I had trouble at first even though i was working and only had 1 child at the time as i didnt telll them I was pregnant and still found it difficult. In the end I spoke to one of the estate agents that was handling the open and told her my situation and I got that house she was having the open for. I showed them my pay slips, centrelink statements and bank statements showing child support i was receiving as well.
So my suggestion is talk to estate agents at the opens and show them you're a nice person and present well because they will remember you for it and ask them what you can show them to prove you can pay the rent. I also found that they liked the offer of a 6 month lease as a trial period.
Good Luck in your search.

Hi
I'm a single mum and I was living with my mum up until last year - so I understand your pain... lol.
I applied for a NRAS property - That's that National Rental Affordability Scheme run by the Government, which gives private investors guaranteed rentals in lower income areas.
I pay about 75% of the average rental for my area. We live in a brand new unit block (2 bedroom) near a train line and shops. I'm also entitled to a small amount of rent assistance (I say small because lets face it $25 a fortnight doesn't pay for anything lol)
NRAS rentals are often advertised on realestate.com. If you check out the website http://www.nras.com.au/ you can get the paperwork from there and make an application.
Its been an absolute blessing and Godsend for us and I never want to move. lol I'm in Brisbane (on the northside) - but I know they have NRAS properties all over Brisbane.

Hi smile
I know this post is back from July 2011, how did you go?
Was it hard to get approved?
How long did you have to wait to get a rental from NRAS?
