having to help 2 week old poo every time Rss

Can anyone offer me any advice. My son is 2 weeks old and is formula fed. He passed the green tar-like poo in hospital but once he cleared that out and got the mustard poo he hasnt been able to go by himself. I have to take off his nappy and bend up his legs to get him to pass. I have been giving him Coloxyl drops for about 1 week now for constipation so thought he would be going by himself by now. Not sure what to do, could he have a bowel problem?? Or am I over-reacting??

have you considered maybe trying a different formula? especially if the one you are using is a gold one, they can cause constipation.

I would have s chat to your GP or CHN about it. Doesn't sound normal to me but I breadtfed so don't know.

i wouldnt worry too much it should ne something he grows out of. He is still littel and is trying to work out how his little body works. My 4 month old was the same and can nwo go on his own. We used to rub his tummy in a clockwise motion to help it move along. I think my DS was about 2 months when he started to go easier by himself.
they say its constipation if their poops are pellety, and if they go a few days-week without going...so its prob more trying to work things out. when DS got a bit older and even still do it nwo i give him some warm boiled water to help him go.
Are you in Aus? If so I would call the maternal child & health line. It's open 24 hours and the number is 132229

oh and he was breastfed and they say bubs go easier when breastfed...not my lil boy haha. but i agree on maybe switching formulas...NAN HA is supposed to be a good one althoughh my boy now gets bad wind on any formula apart from novalac colic
My niece was referred to a specialist as they thought she may have to have her anus stretched a little, but they resolved the problem another way. That was 28 years ago so I don't remember the treatment used.

Hi,

Ok so I was in the exact same situation with my DS when he was born (also formula fed). Took him to our GP several times and was told he was constipated and to give him coloxyl! Never worked. At 6 months I found a lump on his left lower abdomin ( <<Spell check lol), anyway I took him back to the docs and requested an Ultrasound in which they found he was being blocked up, his poo was being blocked up in his Large intestine and not processing through his body.
He had a few ultrasounds and xrays to definately rule out a mass ( Thank God it wasnt), however he still needed minor surgery Up through his bottom, not cut) to clean him out, but as the poo was being blocked in his large intestine they couldnt reach it that way so had to give him Actilax to help soften the poo for him to get it out. Because he wasnt pooing properly from birth they also had to strech his bum so the poo would come out properly once it sofened enough for him to get it out.
He is now 14months old and we still see the specialists every 1 -3 months. He still has his problems now pooing and is sometimes in so much pain he cries.

So please DO NOT just leave it as if he has the same problem as my DS he will not just grow out of it, it may get worse, specially with it being so blocked. It made him so uncomfortable, he hated when we tried to sit him up or anything like that.

Good luck and make sure to get him checked out ASAP!

I also had to take his nappy off with his legs elevated everytime! Since he was born, I changed formulas as well, probably tried every different one out there.
Can I ask where you live?

thanks for your replies. Im in NZ. I asked an expert on this site who said I definately shouldnt be giving him coloxyl drops as he is way too little and just needs to figure his bowels out. Will take him to doc if no improvements in a few days. Annoying how a midwife tells you one thing, and someone something else. Dont they get these lil ones are precious to us

With bf babies, they don't poo everyday. They can go for 2 weeks without pooing. It isn't a problem, there just isn't much waste. I have no idea what is normal for a ff baby to poo. Can someone help me out? Is it meant to be everyday. A lot of times, people assume their babies are constipated when they aren't. His guts have only just started working so you probably just need to give him some time before you start treating it.
