Losec/colic/constipation Rss

My 8 week old has just been put on losec (9 days ago) he doesn't seem to be much different, has settled a bit but still throwing up after every feed. was put on a quarter a day but told to increase if i don't feel its working so I'm giving him a quarter in morn n night. I have read it can take a few weeks to work, so i hope thats the case!

Ive just put him on soy formula but have just been reading from other mothers that its what causes constipation and that its not good for them and since he has been on it he has done quite hard dark green poos and its very hard for him. I've tried EVERY other formula and used thickners, he is still so very unsettled everyday. I think he is now constipated or has colic, always bringing his knees up, gets a really tight belly, clinches his fists and cries to the point where his face is RED and to the point where he is gasping for air, he always has wind pains (i think thats why it is) and has to work so hard to push out any wind and its always a massive strain to do a poo. i barely ever put him down during the day he sleeps ok at night which is great but barely during the day at all.

Ive used everything to try n settle him, gripe water, infacol, infants friend, colic relief, some sugar and water and now trying chammomile tea, still not much of a change, either I'm not sticking to one thing for long enough or thats whats causing it and/or making it worse!

My gp doesn't seemed to stressed about it all and still won't refer my to a paed!

please can someone help! Im at my wits end and have nothing left in me anymore sad

Hi there, my son also had reflux and colic - not fun!

Is your bub on losec liquid or the granules from the capsules? The granules work much better and are easier to get into them. I used to break open the capsule onto a little teaspoon with a few drops of water on it and tip it into his mouth. And then spend the next 5 mins pushing the little granules back into his mouth due to tongue thrust relfex haha. Then wash it down with a little milk. Best not to do it before a big feed as he will probably spew it up again.

I couldn't get my son to keep the liquid form of losec down as they mix the losec with bicarb soda which is extremely bitter so he would just vomit it back up immediately. He was on 10mg losec once a day but sometimes they need more than that. My friend's baby ended up on 30mg a day!

The losec wont stop him spewing. But it will reduce the pain from the reflux as it neutralises the acid. My son was still spewing until he was 8 months old. Even now that he's nearly 2 he's still a bit refluxy but it doesn't seem to bother him and he's no longer on losec (stopped at 5 months old). So my son became a "happy chucker".

It's possible you've been changing formulas too often if you've tried that many and he's only 8 weeks old. I would suggest just choosing one formula (perhaps your GP can suggest a good one for reflux) and stick with it for 2-3 weeks to give him a chance to adjust to it.

My son was breastfed so I don't really know much about formulas - sorry! My son also had terrible colic. He would scream and then fart and then scream and then fart - it was terrible. There's not much you can do about it unfortunately, other than what you're already doing. My son's calmed down by the time he was 3-4 months old.

He was not a very good napper during the day at that age unless I was holding him, which I tended to do a lot. Then I bought a Fisher Price Cradle Swing off TradeMe and he started having his day naps in that. It was awesome, he slept 1.5-2 hour naps in it 3 times a day. He actually slept in it during the day until he was 5 months old! He liked it as he was reclining so that helped with the reflux and the swinging was soothing.

I hope that helps a little bit. I remember people used to tell me it would get better but I just couldn't see an end to it. But honestly it really does get better smile. Just do what you have to do to survive. Don't worry about creating bad habits (eg using the swing or cuddling baby to sleep). Refulx and colic bubs needs lots of comfort from you and also whatever other methods you can find smile.
Great advice Chel-Belle

im having similar thoughts as K_Gubb when it comes to Losec.
my bub is on half a tablet daily and i dont see the improvement yet. she has silent reflux though so its more the pain when she feeds that is the problem. shes been on it for over a week now and she still cried with pain during feeds (BF)
sad

I went to docs with very much the same, switched to novalec constipation and hes so much morr settled!!

Also have reflux and colic formula
Hi my son had silent reflux from about 2 weeks old he would just scream after a feed for about 20mins was horrible! Finally at 4 weeks someone took notice and realised something was wrong and we wernt just hopeless new parents. He was put onto ranitidine given twice a day this worked awesome was like a different baby after a month of hell, we also tilted his bed slightly and he slept on his side with a rolled up towel or blanket behind him to stop him rolling over this helped heaps (he screamed whenever put on his back). He has been on normal karicare formula, dont recommend golds etc as they make the spilling worse. Stopped the medication about 5 months and havnt had any on going problems. Hope this helps smile
