Bub waking every hour from 9pm.... Rss

My little boy is now 3.5weeks old and for the last week he has been waking up every hour on the hour screaming... He seems to have alot of wind and I realise that could be because of my diet, but I have changed things that I thought it may be, but there is no change. He also does this weird choking/gaging thing every now and then which i thought may be a bit of reflux but I took him to the doctor yesterday and he said that breast fed babies shouldn't suffer from reflux and that he thought it could just be a cold even though he doesn't have any cold symptoms... I am just not sure what else to do, should I swap him to formula? I know breast is best but I don't want to keep causing him pain because of all the wind he gets... The poor thing is constantly farting, screaming and bringing his legs right up to his tummy... And he isn't sleeping because of it. Any advice would be a great help.
I know of several breastfed babies who have reflux, its to do with the valve at the top of their stomach (I think) not being properly formed, formula fed babies tend to get it less as the formula is thicker and can stay down longer.
If it is reflux alot of people say that keeping them upright - in a bounce or just cuddled up to you for about 10-20min after a feed helps keep it down too.
There are things you could take to help reduce the wind and you could also give him to help bring the wind up. Your chemist or health store should be able to help.
I would try that and maybe get a second opinion before you stop bf.
Is there still plenty of wet nappies?
also does he sleep if he's on you? maybe carry him around in a sling or something for naps until you can figure out exactly what it is, then he gets some sleep.
good luck, hope some of this helps smile

hi,
i agree with pp, my son was breastfed and had wind so bad, so i know how u feel, my son would go purple with trying to "push" out the wind but just wouldnt come out, and again would wake up screaming and making pushing sounds, i tried a few different medications even though i didnt want him to have them but i just wanted him to get better as he looked in sooo much pain, then a pharmasist(sp) told me to try brauers colic relief and it was the best ever, it helped him so much and its all natural aswell, mayb give that ago...
hope he feels better soon x

btw- i wouldnt stop breastfeeding, formula fed babies get it too, its just one of those things,
Is he getting a proper feed? My little boy woke up every hour in the beginning because he was so hungry. He wasn't attaching properly to the breast as he had tongue tie. Took three weeks before it was diagnosed. YOu should be able to tell though, by whether he can attach on for a good while.
Also, breast fed babies can get reflux. As previous poster said, trying to sit them up after a feed. Make sure you burp them etc.

For wind I tried Gripe Water, and Infants Friend. Both worked effectively and made a big difference to his settling.

Good luck
Sounds like colic to me. I'd try the brauers colic relief or infacol. Breastfed babies can reflux as the pp explained. I'd keep bf as formula is harder to digest and may cause your bub more pain trying to do so. If there's not much improvement a baby chiropractor is definitely worth seeing or another dr who knows more about babies.
My baby is now just over 2 weeks old she had lots of wind from about 3 days old that she couldn't bring up. Midwife recommended Infants friend which has worked a treat she still gets a bit of wind but brings most of it up. If she does get wind and squirm now at least the crying/screaming has reduced to a small whinge as she is in less pain. Just have to give her a few burps during and after feed time.

Also friend recommended moving their legs in a bicycle movement which seemed to work encouraged bowel movement to release pressure from other end.

Good luck.
