Expressing - how much do I need for a 3 week old.
I have just bought my electric breast pump yay. As we never see the amount our babies have whilst on the boob I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough estimate of how much I should have in a bottle to use for a feed? Don't mind having more than enough I would hate to be short. Would like to take a bottle on xmas eve to extended relatives so I don't have to get my boobs out in front of everyone still working on my confidence there. haha.
I just pump until the let down kind of slows right down... sometimes get heaps like 180ml and sometimes only 50ml!
at three weeks my DS could smash a 100ml bottle of EBM in no time and then want to be fed by me as well lol so take heaps! I think it kind of depends on what weight they are as to how much they need as opposed to how old... at that age DS was about 8lb.
You also might want to have a practice round with the bottle at home first, not all BF babies will take a bottle straight away.
I know the feeling of not wanting to get boobs out in front of everyone. I hate it too. I have been just going to sit in another room when DS wants a feed smile he is a bit older though so feeding a bit faster so I understand why you want to pump.

Thanks for reply I got 90mls for first go last night so I might try giving that for her next feed and see how we go while we are at home and pump out some more. Thinking about it I probably should have been more organised and started trying this earlier in the week.
Oh and Zara has just hit 4kg mark. Weighed in yesterday at 4.1kg.
I know this is a bit late now...but for future reference I found Kellymom really helpful, this is their info on expressed milk. Just click on the purple link. smile
