Feeding to much
I am a little worried about my DD's feeding. She is formula feed and downs 120mls every 3/4 hours. Alot of time she looks like she is wanting more. Am I over feeding her? I am worried about her little tummy...

wow!! that is a lot for such a little girl. is she rapidly putting on weight? is she really unsettled? is it going right through her? maybe you need to try a different formula and see if it fills her up better or maybe see your chn or dr as i think its way too much.
My DD came home from hospt a week old having 80ml bottles every 4 hours and was allowed to do a 6 hour gap once over night.
I hope this puts your mind at rest, I looked up DD plunket book and have put below her feeds for first 3 month as they have been recorded. I think your DD is doing fine having 120mls at 1 month 1 day, my little one was having that at 3 weeks 5 days.
she was born 18 june,
7 july - 80-100mls - 2 weeks 5 days
14 july - 120ml - 3 weeks 5 day
25 july - 150ml - 5 weeks 2 day
7 aug - 160ml - 7 weeks 1 day
17 sept - 13 weeks - 180mls
Hope this has helped, sorry for the long reply.
Enjoy the fact that your little girl is taking it and its not the opposite, struggling to get milk and food in is horrible.
take care

Thanks for the replies.
Mummymeg that really did put my mind at ease. 120mls just sounds like a lot of food for such a little munckin. The community nurse weighed her yesterday and said her weight gain was fine. She said that DD won't take more then she wants and if she wants a little more then offer it to her. I just don't want to make she sick or give her a tummy ache due to over feeding. First time mum here, so I guess worrying is normal.
Thank you for your reply!

No probs, if you find she is spilling a bit more you could cut it down 10mls and see if that helps but if its going in and staying in and poos and wees are coming out the other end and shes not crying in pain after a feed then dont worry at all, you are doing a great job. She could also be going through a growing spurt, they sometime want more then. They say this is common around 6 weeks so just heads up if that happens in a couple of weeks she might want a bit more if she girzzles for more after a feed, just try her another 10 or 20 mls and see if that settles her, if it does then you know what the problem is.
It is a bit of trial and error with quantites and formula feeding, the amounts of the container of how much to feed are only a guide and every baby is different, so trust your instincts, you are not going to hurt her by offering another 10mls if she is unhappy and not satisfied at the end of her bottle.
take care and congrats on your beautiful littl girl

new borns feed a lot, i am not sure when this baby is sleeping as she would have to be up the whole time to drink every 45mins??
like for example, up at 7 feed, nappy cuddle,(feed maybe) bed
repeat for the rest of the day at this age she should only be up for an hour max or hour and half extremely max.
all mine were breast feed at this age but even if she was having two feeds in the time she was up she should be sleeping for an hour or more at a time, maybe she is tired and not hungry, have you tried wrapping and popping her to bed or cuddling to sleep???

I am sorry if I confused you but I meant every 3 to 4 hours, not 3 quarters of an hour. I re read my post and thought, "wow I could have written that better".
But geeze, if missy was eating every 45mins I think I would be giving her way to much lol

Hi
They say it's 150ml X weight / by how many feeds a day(24 hrs) they are having
E.G. my son is 3.5kg and feeds about every 4 hours so thats 6 feeds in 24hrs
150 X 3.5 = 525mls
525 / 6 = 87.5mls
If i followed the 'guide line' i would be literally starving my son his feeds are about 120mls each feed and is putting on a healthy 200g ea week so quite frankly i wouldn't abide by it and if your bub is hungry feed her just don't make her finish a bottle she'll stop when full
hope that helps smile
