Tummy time Rss

Not sure if i am putting this in the right spot..
I am a first time Mum & wondering when to start tummy time? My little girl is nearly 4 weeks old & is starting to move her head around a little bit. I am abit nervous if its too early to start tummy time or not?
Both my DD and DS loved tummy time from the day we got home from the hospital. I dont think there is a certain age you have to wait to do this but im not completely sure. You child health care nurse (if you take bubz to one for check ups) should talk about this with you though if your worried.

Thankyou so much for your advice. I wasnt sure if it was safe to start tummy time at such an early age. We both really enjoy chest to chest cuddles so the 'tummy to tummy' is a great suggestion! Thanks again smile
Supervised tummy time is recommended from birth, although in the early days they will only tolerate it for a minute or two at a time. As others have said, tummy time does not just mean being on the floor, it can be laying on your chest, across your arm... basically any position that gets bub off her back. We used to put our hand under DD's chin when she was a newborn in the bath, so she would float on her tummy... it would make her sleepy too!

Tummy time is very outdated and babies SHOULD NOT be put in any position they can not get out of. Not only is this important for your baby's physical development but it also empowers your baby. Just imagine yourself, if you were in this new world that you were still learning about, with everyone being so much bigger than you and then being stuck in a position where you cant see a hell of a lot. Put yourself in your baby's shoes. Same goes for propping to sit, baby containers (jolly jumpers, high chairs, walkers) etc.

I partly agree and partly disagree with this - I agree that if a baby is unsettled or not enjoying the position you put him in that you should not push the matter, however many babies ENJOY the new perspective that being put on their tummy or assisted to sit offers. Not to mention, it helps them learn that they can get to a new position - I stood my daughter up against some furniture when she was about 8.5 months old to show her that she could do it, she burst out into laughter and 2 days later was pulling herself up on things. Tummy time helps babies develop neck and back muscles and helps to prevent flat spots on the head. I'm not saying you are entirely wrong or trying to be judgemental about your parenting ideas, just saying I don't think that it's fair to say that tummy time is outdated. I also wonder how you feel about swaddling, as this too is restritive? Also, babies are completely unable to get themself out of any position, so even laying a baby down on their back is putting them in position they cannot get out of.

I agree with the jolly jumpers whatever those chairs are called. But not sure where u got ur info from. If s child does not have tummy time they will not build tummy muscles and therefore not crawl sit walk as you need your tummy muscles for everything.

Most babies love tummy time some don't but they get use to it!!
Tummy time isn't needed, just pop baby on the back on the floor and baby will learn to move and roll by themselves, You should never put baby into a position they can't get into by themselves, they can as you call it "strengthen their neck" by being held in your arms looking around and popped over the shoulder....

this is idea, also if you want to know what a baby feels like lie on your tummy put your hands at your sides and try and lift your neck. good fun!!!

But newborns can't get themselves into or out of any position???
We did tummy time from about 2 weeks, DD loved it and had excellent neck muscles.
Tummy time is needed to build their back/neck muscles to hold their head up and then eventually roll, crawl, sit, etc.
My youngest wasn't a big tummy time fan, he would get upset after a few minutes for a long time and I would just roll him over once he had enough, but because I gave him tummy time everyday he is already crawling, he is sitting perfectly and he now gets upset when I have to get him up off the floor!

As Alexis&Williams_Mummy said, check with your clinic nurse, GP or paediatrician, they will give you a more information and can show you different ways of having tummy time.
p.s. chest to chest was always my favourite.

Lol, I don't agree with either of you. It gets baby used to a different feeling. Can't wrap your child in cotton wool forever.

Bingo.
