Capsule vs. Carseat Rss

We didn't use a capsule, we used a convertable car seat. BUT if I could go back to do it again I would be getting a capsule. for sure no question about it. I found DS did get disturbed when we put him in/took him out and it just made car journeys stressful. The extra money you have to spend would be worth every penny I rekon.
It would be so much nicer being able to strap DS in the capsule then carry the capsule out to the car rather than have to strap him into the seat when it is already in the car.

But anyway. He is too big for a capsule now anyway smile

Good to hear I will be able to hire one from the butcher for number 2 grin grin grin
Hired a capsule for my first two and will do again with #3.

Just a note about something I picked up - Paed Physio warned against bubs sleeping in capsule for too long as the angle is bad for head/neck. OK if they fall asleep in car obviously, but if you have a chance to transfer them to cot/pram when you get somewhere, then you should aim to do that rather than leave them to sleep for long periods in capsule.

I love my car, but gee it's thirsty!

I've heard something very similar. It too was a warning not to leave kids sleeping in them bacause there was something to do with the angle of their head and it squashing their chest. So they were not breathing deep enough or something and therefor they were receiving lack of oxygen. I think!!! Can't be certain as I didn't take too much notice as I don't use a capsule.

As PP said, this was not about using them in the car, it was about bringing the baby in asleep and letting them continue sleeping in the capsule inside for too long.

Pretty sure it was a warning that was on the news one night!

I personally didn't use a capsule for any of my kids (no real reason why not) but have heard many people rave about them!

Bahahaha! I'm still laughing about the butcher typo!! Hehehehe!!

I also loved having a capsule and a lot of my friends had them too and loved them. I also hired mine and it was $110 for 12 months. Where I lived at the time, the local council used to do it but had stopped by the time I had DD but there was a lady in town who had gone into business doing it. I hear that other councils still hire them out though, through the maternal child health service. Like PPs have said, the best part was that you could get them in and out of the car when they were asleep and not disturb them. And I used to duck into shops with DD in it rather than getting her out and getting the pram assembled. It was fantastic. The only thing was the cat loved sleeping in it too, the little bugger.

Well worth it I reckon!

We had a car seat for reasons:
1. If you have a middle sized to large baby, you wont want to carry them around in it.
2. If you have a high car you wont be able to lift the capsule into the car.
3. Where do you store the capsule when bub no longer needs it?

I would suggest borrow one if you really want to have one or just get a car seat.

I have a capsule with DD2 only because I bought a new pram and it came with it, at almost 8 weeks she is almost too big for it.

I had one for DD1 she lasted 4 weeks until she was too long, borrowed from a family member.

I didnt have one for DS as DD1 grew out of it too quickly.

It is handy but then a car seat is easy as well, and you will have to buy one anyways, I upgraded DS to a maxirider and DD2 will have his seat in a few weeks as she is getting too long and heavy for the capsule, not only do you have the weight of the capsule, Im guessing at least 5kg, but also your baby, (DD2 was my smallest at 3.765kg, birth weight, and now is about 5.5kg at almost 8 weeks, so thats alot to be lugging around.

We were broke so we opted for the newborn-age4 carseat. It wasn't an issue for me not having a capsule - when my babies were little they didn't wake up when I got them out of the seat, I used a sling or a front pack when I was walking around with them and when I was visiting they slept on a couch (or in a washing basket on the odd occasion).

My first baby was a Caesar so I wasn't allowed to carry/lift anything heavier than him for the first 6 weeks, so a capsule would have been useless anyway.

At Plunket I was the only mum that didn't have a capsule (and I was the only mum that breastfed, and the only mum that didn't use a pacifier).

The times I have carried a baby in a capsule I've found them to be heavy and ungainly, I'd much rather carry a baby in my arms. But my sister swears by them.
We found that whether or not you get a capsule depends on the size of your car. We have a Mazda2 and even the smallest convertible car seat did not fit safely into the back seat. As it is, the capsule only just fits. But my bubba loves his car seat. Everytime he gets in it, he is asleep in 5 mins! We found it really handy also when he was a newborn as you could just leave him in the capsule and remove it from the car, therefore not waking him! It was a godsend when we were leaving the hospital. We just strapped him in and there was no double handling. But it really is personal choice as to which you get. Obviously the convertible car seat lasts longer and you get far more usage out of it than a capsule. Good luck deciding! smile
