Sick of people telling me I can't do it !! Rss

I was at my midwife appointment today and she asked what pain relief i wasplanning to use I said i'd really like to try drug free this time and she sort of sniggered at this remark which made me really mad.

Went home to tell dp what had happened and he says 'you'll be having the gas'

EXCUSE MEEE?!?!?!??!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! It's my body and i'd really like to try it drug free this time round !!!!!!!

When I was pregnant with my first my mum did the exact same thing was like ppft yeah i'm sure you'll be saying that once u go into labour.

I believe in myself I can do it but it's a bit hard when no one around me does sad

Well - I'm in the same boat. I haven't mentioned to anyone how I plan on giving birth this time - I already know what everyone around me thinks of me trying to go all natural this time.
I'm just trying to stay focused on what I want. I'm reading a book called 'hypnobirthing' at the moment, and I'm finding it really inspiring and it's helping me to stay positive.
I think go into this birth with your head in the right place and you'll do great! Just think - it's totally possible to have a natural birth - plenty of women have done it - and your body is built to do it - so stay positive hun! I'll be right behind you!! smile
Ive done it three times and yes whilst its tough i think it all comes down to your frame of mind. I had a fatastic midwife who was all for drug free births and reccomended water for pain relief and specalised in water births. I ended up having 2 in the bath and they were by far the easiest and biggest babies. I went in knowing i didnt want anything unless it was needed or i really wasnt coping. The first time i remember saying i wanted one but i was fully dilated by that stage so was too far gone. Once i had one baby drug free i knew i could do it again. If you know you can do it then i believe it is possible and you will more than nlikely walk away a very happy lady. Good luck with your up and coming birth.
Don't worry what others think. Dani09 is right it comes down to frame of mind. Oh and breathing. You will be fine! Just remember this is your body, this is what you want.
Oooooo yes this would get on my nerves too.
There are plenty of people that go through labour drug free??

Its not to say that if you were having a particually bad labour that you wouldnt need them, but if everything is going to plan then you CAN get through without drugs. And there are plenty of other alternatives to help you get through to.

I am the biggest wuss, and cannot take pain! I was always open to drugs. But the way my birth turned out I didnt need them. I used a TENS mechine and had rescue rememedy and got through just fine.
Did end up having an unplanned homebirth so didnt have the option for drugs... but wouldnt have gone for them anyway.

I wish you all the best with your wish for a drug free birth smile
Just have to let others comments go. Happens all the time as a parent. you get advice that you REALLY dont need!
Everyone will have their own opinion of what they think but don't let it get you! Just make sure that you go in knowing what you want but always be flexible incase the need may present its self! With my first i didnt go in expecting anything at all, i had no expectations as to drugs i would use or wouldnt use and i ended up going natural the whole way through! I was not expecting to cope well with it but i also was happy that i just focused on giving birth!!! If you want to do it then just go in focusing on you and your precious baby and nothing else!!

Good Luck with it all!

I know how you feel. I was talking about this to DP just yesterday & he scoffed. Quite honestly i think that if they understood where you were coming from and were your "rock" during labour that it might push you through it?

I did it twice natural and didn't find it too bad because my eldest was fairly quick at 6 hours and my 2nd flew out in under 2. However by the 11th hour of active labour with my 3rd I cracked and got an epidural as I just wasn't dialating. Turns out it was a good idea because he got stuck and I had to ge a c-section.

My advice, good on you for wanting to give it a go but never go into a birth with a particular mind set because every birth is different. Have your preferences and then go with the flow.

Good luck
Stick to it sister! I had all those kinds of comments too and it only made me all the more determined that I could do it providing there were no complications.

When I went into labour the midwife set up the gas and left it on the bed even though I'd told her when I got there that I was going drug free (I was 7cms by then so even at that stage I still knew what I wanted and knew I could do it). It didn't matter, I didn't need it.... at the end of the day they can all say what they want, but nobody can MAKE you have drugs! Use it to make you more determined... you show them how it's done!

(I did however keep in mind that if there was some kind of complication that I would need to be accepting of what was happening. The birth I planned was 'if' everything went according to how it's supposed to. I didn't want to be totally disapointed if I didn't get it exactly how I wanted. Was just lucky I guess that everything went smoothly and I got my drug free birth.)

Hi,
Good on you! Unless there is a need for drugs & you feel like you are handling things well there is no need for them.
I'm sure all the negativity will make you more determined!
Hell- I've done it twice with no drugs and I'm the worlds biggest sook haha..

Believe in yourself, you can do it!
All the best

Xx
stick to what you want and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!! i only had gas for my first and was going to use gas again for my second until i saw my dog give birth to 11 pups with no drugs, no change of expression on her face and no noise - i felt like a wuss for using gas for one baby!! i decided then that i would go drug free and told everyone, but i was lucky to have support. when i went into labour with my second, i ended up staying at home til i was 8/9cms!! i had nice hot showers and counted and breathed through the contractions, and it worked. also pottering around the house during the first stage was helpful as it took my mind off the pain
This is my experience.

My second birth was drug free and it was sooooo much better.

The drugs I was given for my first birth (bee stings and gas) did nothing to reduce the pain and just made me feel worse, so the second time I said no I don't want any drugs. I had a consious birth (like the Marley's consious party ha ha!!!)

You need your wits about you and all the strength you can muster. Mind numbing or pain relief drugs they give you and most of the interventions like epidurals, gas, bee stings etc hinder rather than assist your ability to give birth.

I'm not saying it wasn't painful, but I am saying I could deal with the pain better without drugs.

I found it good to have an attitude like - Don't avoid the pain, embrace the pain of birth - bring it on !!!

My yoga baby/midwife says it's not a pain - it's a sensation. But whatever you call it you'll be able to deal with it better without mind-numbing pain killers.

Also don't be worried about annoying everyone else during labour/birth. You'll be in pain, you might need to yell, scream, do breathing etc, but don't let that be a reason to have staff sedate you.
