Subchorionic Hematoma Rss

Hi all. I found out I was pregnant at 8 wks, unexpectedly as I was on the pill! I already have 4 girls. I had some bleeding at just over 10wks so the doc sent me for a scan. The sonographer said the baby was fine, strong heart rate.
A day later I had a big bleed and passed a big
clot ( size of half my palm). I went to A&E but because it was late on a Sat night, they didn't have anyone to do a scan. Went back the next day where they diagnosed a big bleed on my uterus. It wasn't until I left and read the report that I knew it was a SCH!
My doc wasn't v.helpful and said it was covering 3/4 of the gestational sac so things looked bleak!
I'm 12wks now, still been having a little bit of blood but hardly anything.
I have my nuchal scan in 2 days, hoping this will show if the SCH has got smaller. Also, does anyone know if my nuchal results will be affected because of the SCH?
My last daughter was born via emergency c-section after my uterus ruptured at the very end of labour (had a c-section 8yrs previous with 1st daughter). Anyone think this is why I have developed a SCH with this pregnancy? Because of trauma to the uterus? Maybe a weak spot where bubs first tried to implant itself, scar tissue??? Lots of questions!!!!!
I had one with my first pregnancy, the doctors believe it was due to an underlying blood clotting disorder.

I had bleeding on and off in the first trimester which was quite scary. I had to go on bed rest for a while, and then I wasn't allowed to do any lifting (and I mean pretty much anything) after that.

I had a morphology scan at 19 weeks and they found that it had gone. My body had just absorbed what ever was left of it. I went on to have a healthy baby girl. There are a few other girls on here at have also had them and gone on to delivery healthy babies (but usually a few weeks early).
I have read quite a few positive stories, usually ending in bubs being born prematurely. It is hard to look at the positives sometimes when the doc is saying it doesn't look good!
I am trying to rest as much as possible but with 4 girls (2,4,6 & 9), this is obviously going to be hard!! Anyone else out there with positive stories of SCH?
I knew if I got pregnant again I would have to have an elective C-section because of what happened with DD4.
Hi there,

Im 32 weeks in 3 days, and I had a subchorionic haematoma found at 11 weeks. I had a massive bleed like you explained and then bled like a regular period up until 16 weeks where I had another. I soaked through a maternity pad and my pants from ny house to the hospitalwhich was less than 5 minutes away. They did a scan and it showed now I had 2 haematomas one on the bottom of my placenta and the second covering my cervix, and my placenta had a marginal tear aswell. I bleed heavily until 19 weeks and was put on progesterone gel. When your body feels the foreign object it contracts to try and get rid of it. The progesterone was to stop contractions. I had scans every fortnight because the 2 haematomas pooled together and formed a massive clot which they measured at 137cubic centimeters. Finally at 29 weeks it must have absorbed back into my blood.

From what my obstetrician has told me, it mainly depends on where the haematoma is. If its on or above the placenta there is a chance of the placenta dislodging. I can tell you I have been told more than 5 times I was or will miscarry, but I haven't (now I just have low amniotic fluid levels to deal with!) Try not to google about it, you will find bugger all. And most the posts on the sites I have read are very misleading. Hang in there, I found my first doctor because I was public knew nothing, so I would get consults from a private obstetrician and get the money back from Medicare. They can do scan them and there and tell you a lot more. Sorry for the ultra long post, but I know its a pretty scary situation.
I had one with my 3rd child for no obvious reason.
At about 6 weeks I have a small amount of bleeding, more like spotting and went for an ultrasound which showed everything was fine. Had a little more bleeding around 12 weeks and went for another ultrasound to check it and do the nuchal test. They told me there was a little haemorrhage but they didn't really tell me much about it. I did some research on the net and things didn't look good.
Then at about 17 weeks I felt a kind of pop and gush as I layed down and started bleeding everywhere. Went to emergency and was sitting in the waiting room for ages covered in blood! I also started having pains that felt like contractions. When we were finally seen the doctors didn't seem like they thought my baby was going to make it. They checked the bleeding and thought that it was coming from the placenta and said that if thats where it was from then there normally isn't a very good outcome. They found a heartbeat but kept reminding me even though there was one at the time, it probably wouldn't stay like that.
I went for another ultrasound the next day and the bleeding was coming from the haematoma that I had earlier on, so it had expanded. But the baby was fine and the bleeding was on the outside of the sac. I kept bleeding over the next few weeks and it slowly slowed down, then at my 20 week anatomy scan they could see the a little bit of the haematoma left over. After the scan I had dark brown almost black bleeding for a few days, then a couple of weeks later I had another scan to check the haematoma and it had all cleared up so the blackish blood would have been the last of it.
Once it had cleared up there was luckily no risk for me anymore. My baby was perfectly fine and was born overdue.
I did read that if they are going to clear up by themselves then they will do so by about 20 weeks. Good luck, I hope everything turns out fine for you!

Hi, I hope you're doing okay. I had a Subchorionic Haematoma diagnosed at 8 weeks-ish. I was bleeding and cramping. Everyone told me 'you'll be fine'. So I organised a scan on my own and found the Haematoma which they classed as 'small and nothing to worry about'. Heartbeat was strong, etc, so I tried not to worry. I couldn't find much information about it anywhere, though what I did read all sounded quite positive. I had a scan a week later and my baby's heart beat had stopped. In my case the Haematoma was in exactly the right spot to cause a problem with the placenta. I tossed up whether or not to post this as I don't want to worry you. But I want you to rest as much as possible - go to bed. No one told me to rest at all. And secondly, I'm really keen to get information or stories out there about this condition as I think its a lot more common then we realise and nobody talks about it (or warns us about it). I don't think your nuchal results will be affected. And I'm not sure why these things happen in the first place - no one could tell me ANYTHING, and I just felt like I was being a bother asking questions. I'm still a little angry about the whole situation.

Best of luck and I hope your scan brings you great news. X
Sam37 I'm so sorry to hear about what happened. You're very right though there is no information, and drs seem to give very conflicting information, so its all very different what we get told. My first Dr didn't even know what one was. Once again, I'm sorry for your loss.
Thanks ladies! I keep reading stories of people that are told they will miscarry, but then deliver a healthy baby, it is all very reassuring to hear! I still don't know too much about my SCH, just know from the scan that it is under the placenta, between baby and cervix? Is it better to be there than above the do you think BWalker5000??
I'm glad you posted sam37, it is ok & like you said seems to be a lot more common than people think. General doctors don't seem to know enough about this. Was going to add a photo of my scan pic from 11wks but not too sure how to do it??!!!
When my 2 clots pooled together, it was between the sac and over my cervix. My Dr said it was safe there, but the only issue was with there being something in my uterus that there shouldn't be, that I will more than likely have my uterus contract to push it out., which could result in PROM. But that's why I used the progesterone gel. I was also told because it was covering my cervix that I should expect to bleed it out. If you have a Dr and he isn't helping you should ring around and find an ob that will help. I know its hard when you have kids but you must really try and rest too, don't lift anything heavy and just take it easy.
Hi There

Hematomas suck and there is not enough info about them and most doctors/midwifes dont know enough about them either so thought I would share my story... Sorry if its abit long and for my spelling ha ha.

I started bleeding at 6weeks with DS2, went and had a scan which found a small hematoma - unfortunately for me as I had previously had a miscariage 2 months prior my midwife and A&E doctors assumed I would have another one and that there was nothing I could or shouldn't do that would make any difference.

Well my bleeding got alot worse, I was regularly passing clots the size of my palm, bleeding all shades of red and so heavily that i'm sure I kept the people who make Libra pads in business. I basically didn't have a day where I wasn't bleeding, I stopped going to A&E and talking to my midwife about it coz I was so over them saying 'you'll probably just have another miscarriage - theres nothing you can do' (I was having 2 weekly scans so they knew that the hematoma was growing but for some reason were totally focused on the whole miscarriage thing).

Luckily for me I had my 12week nuchal scan with an amazing ob who knew all about hematomas she told me that the only time I should be getting out of bed was to go to the toilet (as it was soooo large by that point). As far as the nuchal scan goes your hematoma wont make any difference to that but my scan showed that my placenta had started separating because of the size of the hematoma. The scarey thing is that had I kept taking the advice I was previously given I would have lost my baby. However, I switched to the ob who did my nuchal scan, I stopped lifting DS1, stopped vaccumming, anything that engaged my core and rested as much as I could.

The good news is that just by doing such a simple thing as resting my hematoma got smaller and eventually at 24weeks it had gone. For me, the damage had already been done to my placenta and to the insertion point of the umbilical cord (sp?), so ended up in hospital with more bleeding and threatened preterm labour at 28weeks but managed to hang on till 33weeks when my son couldn't wait any longer (and would have been in trouble if he had as my placenta was in terrible shape). So to end a very loooong story I had a terrible pregancy as a result of my hematoma but had a wonderful outcome - so it is possible.

I hope all goes well for you, rest as much as you can and dont do any lifting.

xx

Ktt1, thanks for your story. It is nice to hear a happy ending! I still haven't seen an Ob, got my doc to write a referral for one (had to ask him!), that was Wed last week, called the hospital today and they haven't got it in their system yet, she said it can take up to 2wks! I haven't seen a midwife yet either. My nuchal scan is tomorrow so hoping they will tell me more, although the lady that did my 10wk 6day scan told me nothing except that baby was fine, it was only because I ended up in A&E with heavy bleeding and clots the next night, that I even knew I had a SCH! Surely the sonographer should have said something?!
Anyway, just been spot bleeding for the last week, and a bit more dark, mucusy type blood (sorry) tonight. Is that normal?? I know there is a great array of blood colours associated with SCH!
Hi There

In my experience the brown mucusy blood is the old blood so its a good thing to get it out, its when the bleeding is fresh and bright red that you're hematoma will be getting bigger.

The sonographer may not have said anything to you coz they might not have seen the hematoma or more likely they didn't think it was a big deal. They are apparently quite common its just when they grow really big that they cause problems. Try not to stress to much about it - hard I know but I always found if I was stressed I would bleed more (something to do with more blood rushing around your body) and just rest as much as you can.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thank you. Well I be just had my nuchal scan, she measured the SCH and it is slightly smaller than what it was from my 11wk scan, and baby is slightly bigger than the SCH!
The sonographer from 10wk scan knew it was there as she wrote it in the report to the doc, but didn't tell me! I have just made an appointment for the doc in 2days for the NT results.
