Bassinet vs Cot. Rss

So with DD we put her in her cot from day 1. It freaked me out a little seeing such a little person in a big cot.

This time I'm thinking of getting a bassinet. But I'm worried about the safety of them (yes I worry alot!). I mean, bumpers aren't allowed in cots for safety reason, so what about padded bassinet sides?

Money isnt the issue, I just want to know which is best!!
I personally think bassinets are a waste of money as they don't seem to be used for very long, but I guess if you wanted bubs in your room with you and there wasn't much room it would be the easier alternative.
Im thinking about these options too. We have been given a cradle but not sure if we should invest in another mattress when we just got a new one for the cot.
We also used a cot straight away with our first.

We used a bassinet with our second for 8 weeks while we waited for DD1 to transition out of the cot.

I also worried about the bumper. So we used a wooden bassinet instead.
I plan to use both with bubby
bhbmumma - where did you get your wooden bassinet from?

I bought one second hand off Trade Me, New Zealand auction site.
I had my dd go straight to a cot and hated doing that!!!

With DS I got a 2nd hand bassinet great condition as they are only used for a short amount of time and it has been my best purchase by far!!!

I've been able to have ds in my room up until 3 days ago, it's small and snug so bub has felt secure and slept WAY better then my dd ever did!! Getting up to him is easy as he is in my room! He has gone to his own room now at 11 weeks but still in his bassinet, he will maybe transition to the cot this weekend depending how he goes smile

You question about the difference between bumpers and bassinets? Well bumpers are soft and not overly secured in the cot, where as a bassinet's side is tight and flat and often even has ventilation holes on the side making it near impossible for a bub to be smothered smile

If I had another baby I would definately buy another bassinet without hesitation!

I agree with One Lucky Mummy, Bassinets are designed with their sides tight and secure unlike a bumper used in a cot. We would have needed to rearrange our room to fit the cot so decided on buying a bassinet and it has been a great investment.

DD is now 10 weeks and I expect she'll have another few weeks comfortably in the bassinet, I love having her so close to me when I need to get up in the night.

In the early days it was handy too as it has wheels so I could have her with me anywhere in the house and it also converts to a rocker.
hi I used a bassinet to start with found it great nice and snug I personally wudnt put baby straight into cott my baby was rolling really early so freaked me out.I dont see how bassints are not safe I brought mine new I do with everything just to be certain of quality ect I got one with rocking and left it on because of earthquakes then its swaying with it and wont tip ect,as for bumpers and cott toppers plunket change there mind on a daily basis as to weather there safe I love them and use them dont want my bub hitting his head on hard wooden cott I think as long as there tucked in tight and tied up properly common sence prevails.Obviously as baby grows and there crawling ect I wouldnt use them.
You could get a cradle!

Typically bigger than a bassinet especially if you buy certain brands like Boori, Gro Years and there are a few others and 'I' prefer them looks wise as they are not so frilly.

We had one with DD1 and bought another when we had DS1 as we liked them and we had one in his room and one for our room. We always planned to have four kids so, although they are only in them for 6-9 months we could justify buying them.

DD1 was only in it for 6mths, DS1 was in it for 8 months, DD2 was in it for 10.5 months as she was a really bad sleeper and her room is at the other end of our house so we pushed it a little. DS2 is still in them and will be for atleast another 5 months as he will be sharing a room with DD2. So, overall our kids will have been sleeping in them for 2.5 yrs. My point is it depends on how many kids you have and if they are good or bad sleepers etc.

Even if we only had one child we would probably still buy one as 'I feel' a newborn just looks so lost in a cot and cradles and bassinets are so much more snug for them!

i like to have a bassinette becuase i like bub next to me but to be honest both bassinette and cot arent needed in my house because baby sleeps with us. you dont need to put padding on your bassinette either so its realy no different to a cot.

just read through some other posts, not sure what bassinette you are talking about but mine was a cane one so no padding or frills or anything like that.
