Downs Syndrome Rss

Hi

I just got a ph call this morning from my OB informing my nuchal test came back and our bubs was at high risk. She said there was a test available if I wanted to know if my child has downs syndrome, I said yes. I'm absolutely devastated and don't even know how to feel at the moment. She did say there was a 1 in 23 chance of bubs having downs syndrome.

Can anyone please let me know if they have had a amniocentesis and how long results take?

Thank you
I had the amnio with last pregnancy ( 10 years ago) and paid $500 extra to get results in 24 hours. It did not give all the results for all the other things they test for, just downs in 24 hours. All was good. The other results came in 2 weeks. My sil had a 1 in 13 'risk' and chose not to have the amnio as due to her age at the time( 45) and she already miscarried not long before. The doc said which is so true that there was a 12 in 13 chance that everything was fine( and it was).Good luck its certainly nerve wracking

Hi,

So sorry to hear your news. It's a very tough time.

When I was pregnant with the twins I had to have an amnio done on them but for other resons. You will get two sets of results. The first you get withing 48 hours but the main test reults you have to wait 2 weeks. The first results are from memory about 95% accurate. Please I am not putting you off having the test if you want to know for sure. But haveing it done remember that it does carry a risk of misscarriage. It is a very hard time and I had heaps of test done with the twins and always told that if I was not going to change the outcome if the results were bad don't have the test. But saying that my comeback was always at least them I would be more prepaired.

Good luck with your decison and hope that you get a good result. I know it's hard but try not to stress. If you search you will find many positive stories on huggies of families that have had the same news and then all was okay. Not everything is accurate..........But saying that the amnio is.

Good Luck. Hope that you get good results.

I can totally empathise; being told you're high risk is such an awful feeling. For me it wasn't even the thought of my baby having downs it was not knowing for certain either way. So i opted for an amnio. I had mine done at 15+3wks. I was told the tests take 2wks (as i wanted the full chromosonal workup not just the accelerated testing) but the Dr who performed the procedure called me 1.5wks later with the results. (No chromosonal issues, yay!)

Hugs to you, stay strong xx

People who live in glass houses.....shouldn't walk around naked!

i am booked in for nt scan next week and was waying up options whether to get it done or not. it gave me the thoughts of not getting it done.its the reality of it all. i hope everything works out for you.

Thank you every one for the hugs and well wishes

xx
I had an amnio last pregnancy and got the FISH test results back in 2 days (which only screens for the trisomys and can tell you the sex). My obstetrician said she's never seen a FISH test come back clear with the full test showing a problem. (Although I'm sure it does happen but I assume is very rare).

I don't know how long the full results took as we didn't get them immediately but I've heard it takes about 2 weeks.

The amino was uncomfortable and scary but not painful.

I'm sorry you're having such a stressful time sad

Good luck and GBH"s
I had amnio with DD2 as I came back with 1 in 80 chance of DS. As pp has said, it was uncomfortable (but mainly the emotional side of it!) but not painful. We paid $175 to have the results back within 48 hours and all was clear. Having said that though, the choice is totally up to you as it is your life. If you want more specifics about the procedure, where we had it done etc, feel free to PM me. Let us know how you go.

Hi are you saying "1 in 23 chance of bubs not having downs syndrome" or "1 in 23 chance of bubs having downs syndrome"

Hi are you saying "1 in 23 chance of bubs not having downs syndrome" or "1 in 23 chance of bubs having downs syndrome"

I have 1 in 23 chance of having downs syndrome baby (I just re-read what I wrote). I rang her back yesterday to try and understand what the results mean. I have an appt first thing in the morning to discuss my options and arrange for an amnio as I have to travel to the city for it, I live in the country.
I'm trying not to stress to much until I get the results and I will ask for the FISH test. I don't want to upset my children so I'm holding it together.

How early can an amnio be done, I'm almost 14 Weeks?

Thankyou everyone for the support on here!!
When pregnant with DD1 it was thought she might have downs (Nuchal test came back showing high)..
DH & I both decided not to have the amnio because of the risks (We had had 3 m/c previously) and we would love baby no matter what.
DD was born beautiful & although with a few health problems, no down syndrome. smile

With the twins I had amnio (16.5 weeks) because of several reasons including twinB (DS) showing high for downs... Although uncomfortable it wasn't painful...
We had results within a week and thankfully all was fine. smile

The not knowing and waiting is the worst.
Sending hugs and wishing you luck. xxxx
