Cough Rss

Hi my nearly 22 month old ds has a bad chesty cough so I took him to the drs yesterday & dr said just let it run it's course. I'm wondering should I get a second opinion because ds was up half the night coughing & screaming everytime he coughed it seemed like he was going to choke. I asked dr if I should give him cough medicine & dr said no he doesn't need anything. What would you do? Thanks

Hi,

Have you got a vaporiser? I always have ours running when my girls get colds and coughs and it seems to ease it a bit to allow them to get some sleep. But if you're really worried take him back to the dr or another one for a second opinion. Did the Dr actually hear the cough?
Yes I've got a vaporiser but we have ds in our bed while he is sick & our dd is also in our room in the bassinet she is 10weeks old so not sure if we should have it on with her in the room. No unfortunately dr didn't hear ds cough that's always the way they cough all the time other then the time u want them to.

Take him back then or to another dr. I let my little one go for ages once with a cough and it turned out to be croup - the poor little thing. As soon as she coughed the dr knew it was croup. I felt really bad that I didn't take her sooner. Hopefully your little one just has a cold - good luck.
My son has had croup a few times. I know what you mean about your child not coughing while you are at the doctors & seeming perfectly fine. If you can maybe stall until your child does cough. The doctor would only have to hear it once to know. If it is croup he would be coughing alot & it is such a distinct sound. It is very throaty, deep & kind of like "hoop hoop". My son sometimes obstructs his breathing when he has a bad cold/bronchitis & the best thing is steam (jump in the shower or turn it on really hot, shut the door & stand in the bathroom for 10 minutes. The choking epidsode usually correct themselves but are scary. They often happen for our son when he wakes in the middle of the night & he panics & starts coughing & choking. The things that work best for us are staying calm, distraction with a fav toy or something interesting, cuddles, steam & a warm drink. If it is croup the doc should prescribe some steroids (Redipred) for 3 days.
If you have a voice recorder in your phone than you could record the cough for doctor in case there is no coughing whilst at GP. This is a tip I picked up from a speech therapist who said children never do the behavior that they are getting assessed for.
Thanks everyone for your replys he wasn't as bad today as I've been giving him cough medicine. Ds has not been choking as much so he is back in his own room with Vicks vaporizer on & the baby monitor on it's been 2 hours & haven't heard a beep so fingers crossed he has a good night sleep & is getting better.
