Nits!!! Rss

I cannot believe it- DD has nits sad feeling like a bad mama right now lol

I thought we'd be expecting these at school age- not this young! Poor bubba- she's not bothered at all, no itching etc.. But still I feel bad. She doesn't go to preschool, we didn't go to mothers group last week, all we have done is play with her cousins on the weekend and rang SIL to warn her but none of them have them so who knows where they have come from?!

I am a hairdresser by trade and I have never had them!!

*shudder!!*

I was always told nits like clean hair! So if thats true I wouldn't feel bad, it just shows you how good of care you take of your DD! smile She could have caught them from anyone I guess. Don't feel bad, I hope you get them under control soon smile

Thank you KC, that's the only bit of info that's giving me comfort lol I know it's not the end of the world but still - I freaked out lol x

Ahhh don't feel bad...so many kids get them it's so difficult to avoid!!

They are nasty little critters though!
There was a notice at DS's old daycare about nits, so I rang his grandmother who was a hairdresser to reassure myself that 18mth olds don't get nits - she informed me that they do! Bugger!

How horrible for you, but at least your DD won't remember getting them! How will you treat them as I would be scared to use the normal stuff on such young skin? But if thats the only option.
I just itched my hair for a good minute reading this post. I hate nits. Does your DD have long hair?

Lol how funny - that's what I thought - our babies are too little for nits!! I suppose if they have hair they are fair game! I am worried about the chemical stuff too! Am going to chat with the pharmacist tomorrow and see what he says but I also heard about using a nit comb with conditioner on dry hair but not sure if that only removed the nits but doesn't treat the eggs...

Argh, it's gross and they look terrible when you pull them out!!

Lol sorry! I have been itching all over since I discovered them!! I rang DH at work and told him about it and when we spoke again later, he said he's itchy now too laugh

You could just try a plastic nit comb and tea tree oil?

Was trying to reply to your other post and it didn't work lol

Great idea, didn't even think of that - thanks Nic smile

they say once they get rid of them you can use a preventative that you make up with water, tea tree oil and conditioner that you spray on their hair for a detangler at the same time

also when cleaning their bedding wash in hot water

No worries!

It shouldn't be too time consuming to go chemical free because she wouldn't have a tonne of hair at 16 months so your lucky smile
I just thought that I would add that there is not much out there these days that will kill the nits and their eggs.... certainly nothing that you would want to put in a young childs hair.
You can put loads of conditioner in her hair and leave it for a bit and that will smother the nits and then it is just a case of getting the eggs out one by one.
If you DD has longer hair then I recommend doing small sections and then plaiting the sections.... then you know that you have got all of the eggs.
If you can find a metal comb that has prongs close together they are the best for nit extermination.
We had a talk by a chemist at kinder last year which was really good. A lot of people don't realise you have to do a follow up treatment after 7 days in case you missed any eggs and they've since hatched. He said that's why most people have trouble getting rid of them quickly. He also told us not to worry about washing bedding etc as the nits only live for a few hours once they are off hair.

My biggest fear if DD gets them is that she passes them on to me cause it would be much harder getting rid of them in long thick hair .....
Thanks ladies! I ended up using kp24 - I think a bit chemical but there is tea tree and other natural oils in it so hoping its not too bad - I just so badly wanted them gone!

Knockonwood - I have learnt those things too, very interesting what you learn when you look into it hey? Like the bed sheet thing...I'll be washing all linen etc.. But the kp24 stuff said to buy their special soaker etc but that's not really necessary as they won't survive on there anyway!!

Argh...hopefully I haven't got them, have to get DH to check sad

If you have a good nit comb in the shower with conditioner gets them out quick wink
I have long hair and being a bit brutal I got them all out in a matter of days.
Hi all, Just thought I would add that Coconut shampoo & conditioner seem to prevent them coming back too... We were getting them recurrently from my StepDaughters (not thier mums fault, She has spent hundreds on treatments) & I came across a tip in a magazine that suggested the shampoo... Well its been 3mths & the girls still get them but we dont (touch wood), Just thought it might help grin
