Getting tonsils taken out
My DS saw an ENT specialist yesterday for a tongue tie and the doctor has also reccomended that he get his tonsils and adenoids taken out aswell as the tonsils are enlarged and could also be causing speech problems. What can I expect from the surgery and the recovery? I'm worried about it and not sure if I want him to get them out.

How old is your DS? Mine was almost 5 when he finally had his tonsils and adenoids taken out.
The whole thing didn't take too long, about an hour or so for the surgery, they let me come in with him until he was knocked out, and he was awake and pretty good quite soon after. They let me stay in the room with him in the hospital (in a very uncomfortable fold out bed, but I didn't care, that's not what I was there for) and we left the next afternoon.
He felt fine for the first day (after effects of the pain killers smile) but after that, he was in pain for nearly 2 weeks. It wasn't extreme, but it did hurt for a few days, then got steadily better, and he had trouble eating anything too hard for the first few days. But after that, he was great, and hasn't looked back!!
My DS' tonsils and adenoids were HUGE, to the point the tonsils were almost touching, but it still took me 3 years of fighting to get him into a specialist. I kept getting told he would grow out of it by several GPs. As soon as the specialist looked, he said they need to come out asap, and when I spoke to the surgeon afterwards, he was astonished they made us wait so long, he said he hadn't seen either tonsils or adenoids that big for years.
Long story short, if they are recommending it, get it done, I really recommend it. The younger they are, the quicker they recover. And in our case, DS' tonsils DID have an adverse effect on his speech, which we are now having to see a speech therapist for. He has said since getting them out it felt like having a ball lodged in the back of his mouth, so he has trouble with making a few sounds. This would have been greatly reduced (not saying he wouldn't have had any trouble, but it wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad).
Good luck, do whatever you think is best for your child, but it had nothing but positive effects for us smile
How old is your DS?
He's 4. Thanks for all of your information. I have spoken to the doctors assistant about a few things and she will be passing on all of the information and DS will most likely move up a category and have them out sooner.
