General anaesthetics and young children Rss

Morning smile

So yesterday we got the appointment for our 15 1/2 month old ds to have his MRI scan under general anaesthetic on the 22nd of May. I understand they need to try to find out whats causing his seizures. We had been hoping they may do it under sedation but they said as the test lasts for over 1 hour they need to do a general anaesthetic.
I'm feeling pretty worried of letting him have the test as feel it's quite risky for him to have a general anaesthetic sad
He needs to fast from 7am and we need to get to the hospital by 11.30am.

Can anyone share their experiences of their child having a general anaesthetic and how they coped? What did your child wear at the hospital?
Also how long did your child need to stay? Ds is down as a day patient

Any advice would be great smile
Thanks Tutu and Lulu smile

I just worry as he seems OK and when he's not having his seizures he is absolutely perfect and I think am I putting him at unnecessary risk. Which of course I know deep down I'm not as the hospital wouldn't suggest it if they didn't think it was a good idea.
I'm glad your little one recovered well from her surgery smile

I don't think your doing it unessescarily you will be finding out what is causing it and that can only be a good thing. i know how scary it can be but i'm sure all will be fine. sorry i can't help more but i think what your feeling is totally normal. with DD2 i didn't have time to think about any of it, it all happened so quickly

Thanks smile
Thanks melmul and Duckie for your replys. smile

I'm glad that surgery has improved your little ones life melmul.
I totally understand what you mean Duckie and in some ways hope that the scan is all clear as then that means nothing sinister is causing his seizures and then his next tests which will be an EEG a few weeks later will be looking for signs of epilepsy, which at the moment is what the doctors are thinking he has.
In the paperwork I received from the hospital it says as soon as we arrive at the hospital he'll have the numbing cream put on his hand ready for the drip.
I think the hardest thing he'll find is the fasting as usually he has his breaky at around 8am and then usually a snack around 10.30am. So I will just have to get him up earlier so he's ready for breaky earlier.

Thanks again for your replys.
We have just recently gone through much of this with DD2 (20 months) as she is having seizures.. She had her MRI about a month ago under a general and it went really well.. We just had her dressed in a lose top and bottoms so doctors could easily access for drips etc.
She had her last food and drink just before midnight and then water was allowed to I think about 3am.. We had to be at the hospital at 9am for MRI at 11am.. She had numbing cream as soon as she arrived. When she went in, she was given a sedative with mask and then had a needle put in for the general..
She too will be having an EEG -booked for in 3 weeks time I think.

Best of luck to you and your son and I hope it's nothing sinister. smile
I'm lucky that both my dd's so far haven't needed any general anaesthetics. I just wanted to wish you the best of luck and hope they find out what's wrong with your ds. I've been reading your posts and you have been through so much with him. Hopefully he will get better soon.

Thankyou for your reply. I'm sorry you've had to go through seizures with your little one too. Do you have the results of the MRI yet? In a way I'm hoping that ds's MRI doesn't show anything as then at least we'll know it's nothing really sinister. For your dd's EEG test does she have to be put to sleep using a general anaesthetic too or are they just going to use sedation? I really hope you get some answers to whats causing her seizures.
