Day Care & Wiping Bum Rss

DD1 spend 8 hrs at day care today and she normally spends only 4. They had extra space and offered to keep her longer.

Around 5 pm tonight she was saying her bum was sore. I had a look and she had a very red vagina and bottom. Her knickers were poo stained and urine as well.

At 3 yrs + 2 mths is she expected to be able to wipe herself properly?
At home I always help as she doesn't get the front to back idea.

What or how do I talk to the head teacher about this?
oh when I asked daycare if she had done a poo because she had not done one at all yesterday so I was expecting her too. I was told no. She is on their remind list for toileting plus they have a list of who uses the toilet and what they do. I looked at this list and it only had 3 x urine.
When i was working in the 2-3 yr old room we used to help the toilet trainers and younger ones out. We used to have set times everyday when we would get them to sit on the toilet (before meals, sleeptime etc) and we would take note if they went or not, and make sure they were cleaned up properly.

But sometimes the kids would take themselves off to the toilet (usually the older ones) so they might slip through with an unwiped bottom.

Maybe talk to the carers and explain that at home she get help with this, if she did visit the toilet on her own, they might have assumed this is what she does at home and doesn't need help?...

Also, not sure what your centre is like but at the ones i workd at, at 3 years the kids moved up into the 'bigroom' and we did not wipe bottoms in there, unless requested by the parents.

Hope this helps smile
Yeah i agree the probably didnt know just mention it to them. children in the kinder room generally just go themselves and are expected too as the ratios in kinder room are much higher so a staff member cannot spend all their time helping children makes it tricky I know with children still learning but I am sure they will help her if she needs it, just let them know, and go from there...
At our daycare the teachers are expected to help if the child needs them to help, is the short answer. Doesn't matter how the child is. In saying that, the Toddler room takes children from 2 to 3.5 and the teachers help them, but I'd imagine that there is less help offered in the Preschool room where the children are 3.5 to 5.

There is one particular teacher that seems to have an issue with wiping bums at DD's daycare though. It was the same back when DD was in nappies, this teacher would frequently leave poo on her bottom after changing, and she is just the same now that DD is toilet-trained! I even ask DD sometimes if this teacher helped her go to the toilet and DD always says yes, so I know it is the same teacher all the time. One day last week, DD had an accident and did a poo in her knickers. I got the knickers out of her bag at home and found a huge, well-formed chunk of poo in them - I mean seriously, how hard would it have been to chuck it down the toilet before putting the knickers in the bag?
