Hi, I used "Silent Nights: Overcoming Sleep Problems in Babies and Children" by Dr Brian Symon. I found it fantastic and started using his techniques when my bub was 6wks old as he was just not a sleeper. It is a form of controlled crying but they don't call it this. The website gives an overview www.silentnights.org It worked for us and I still refer to the book occasionally when I am not sure of myslef (Jake is now 9mths and is sleeping through form 7pm to 6:30am)I hope this helps.

I read Elizabeth Pantley's No Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers. Her website can be found here.

I've used Tizzie Hall's Save Our Sleep with my DS since he was 7 days old, she has just realeased Save Our Sleep Toddler, which I have just finished reading. I have found both books to be very helpful and don't know what I would have done without them.
another one is "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Dr Marc Weissbluth, explains the 'science' of sleep and addresses sleep issues common in certain age groups as well as general guidelines for 'healthy sleep'. I found this great with my DD2 who was dreadful sleeper as it helped me understand where i was going wrong and how to help. Different things work for different children, so maybe check out some of these at your local library if you can before buying. All the best with your little one!
