baby books Rss

Just wondering if you have a really good baby book that explains what should be happening and when? I know that every baby is different and will cut teeth etc at different stages, but I'd like a reference to know things are going along well. thanks.
I have 'What to Expect the First Year', which I have referred to quite a few times. Like you I know it's not the be all and end all but it is quite helpful!

I would suggest getting it from Big W as the major bookshops charge an arm and a leg for it.
I'm in NZ so not sure if you have the same things over there, but I found that actually two free books were better than any of the books that I purchased! One is a Plunket book and the other is a Bounty book. They were both in a pack that they give out at the hospital when the baby is born. I purchased maybe two or three different baby books and I wouldn't recommend any of them, and in fact can't even remember titles off the top of my head.

In my experience, I'd say that if you're looking for a factual reference of what should happen and when, you can easily find this information in free publications or from online sources and I wouldn't bother with books. I think books come in most useful for when you have actual problems and you need help from a specialist source.
I agree with Izzys_mum that you can get a lot of that stuff online for free but I'm one of those people who like to have books around so I got a couple. My absolute favourite/best was "Baby Love" by Robin Barker. It's very practical, comprehensive and easy to read. It was my bible when DD was newborn right through to 1, and now I've bought her second book "The Mighty Toddler", which is proving just as good for the toddler years.

I also have "Kid Wrangling" by Kaz Cooke but I found it didn't go into as much detail about the different stages as I wanted. It is bloody hilarious and a lighthearted look at things (which is waht I needed sometimes!), but it covers the ages from newborn right through to 5 and I found Baby Love was much more detailed. I didn't have a question that that book (or Huggies mums!) didn't answer.

I tried "What to expect the first year" but I found it was very American, which is another reason I really liked Baby Love as it's written by an Australian. (Not sure if you're in Australia or not sorry.)

Hope that helps! smile
