advice with babies dry skin :)
Hi everyone I have a 8 and a half month old baby boy who has echzma (sorry bad spelling) anywho he has dry pink splotches all over his bum and tummy and recently a few on his jawline.I use baby bedtime bath stuff and aveno sensitive intensive moisture cream after bath but yet not much of an improvement.Plunket nurse reccommend I bath him every 2nd day so thats what I've been doing still not making much of a difference your suggestions please? smile
I wouldn't use anything in his bath. Especially if it contains soap. So No bath wash, soaps etc. I get it and can only use sorbolene moisturiser. I'm sure some other mums can recommend some things you can use. smile

I agree with Little Miss's, don't use any "baby" products in the bath. Johnsons is one of the worst for drying out skin, and aveeno is made by johnsons too. I was recommended the QV bath oil for DD when she got bad dermatitis and that was nice. I just use plain sorbolene moisturiser but not the one in the pump pack because they contain substances to water them down that can actually aggravate skin more. Apparently tubs of sorbolene are the way to go.

First we had Each Other, Then we had You, Now we have Everything
coconut oil.
put a teaspoon or so in his bath
& i agree with mummy & baby - J&J are definitely the worst product on the market... they smell "nice", but OMG, so full of nasties - that's why they smell "nice"

Thanks for the great advice ladys pitty I did a big stock up not that long ago on all that stuff lol o well guess I'll use it myself hehe i'll go and get what you ladys suggested tomorrow the cocoa oil's bound to smell yummy smile
LOL - that'd be right... always the way isnt it & it's soooo expensive....
The coconut oil does smell great, make sure you get an organic one, not the suntan lotion style one... LOL
If bub feels a little greasy when he gets out of the bath, just use a little less on the next time.. once you dry them off, they feel great... oh, & when you dry him, try to pat him dry, not wipe him, if that makes sense?

Makes perfect sense smile What is the name of it? just cocoa oil? I was thinking of the butter lol
Should I change his shampoo over too? just another johnson brand
coconut oil. Great stuff, great for cooking with as well as on the skin.
yes you should change his shampoo over too. eczema is a reaction to something. Any chemicals on the skin, washing detergents in clothing, clothing material, nappies, bedding, food intolerances can all contribute or cause eczema. You need to look at it all. Forget any of the commercial brands of baby products. They are of no use to you now because it won't help his skin at all. Basically, whatever you buy - you want it to be safe to eat. If you can eat it, its probably ok on his skin.
With the bathing, water dries the skin out. You need to do it as little as possible. I would be aiming for twice a week.
All the best!

also, you shouldn't need to shampoo his hair very often. It strips the natural oils and you will find at that age their hair stays pretty clean. Although some weeks its full of food and mud....lol Basically only wash it if you have to. Whatever you use on his hair, will be absorbed into his skin.
When my son had eczema only sorbolene was used, I even used it with the blue nappy liners to wipe him when he filled his nappy. Also couple of drops of pure lavender oil, its natural and puts moisture back into the water (doesnt make them slippery either) and helps them to sleep. My son had it along with other problems because he has Food Chemical Intolerance. I use to put a drop on his bed sheet near the edge (couldnt put anything on his skin due to reactions). So he would breathe it in and help him to sleep. Not sure if it did help but I now use the oil in my little ones bath now. Hope you find what works for your little one smile
